Eddie realized he wanted to be a comedian at age 15 after listening to a Richard Pryor stand up special. He became a cast member on ‘Saturday Night Live’ from 1980-1984, developing some of the most iconic characters including a cynical Gumby, Mr. Robinson — a streetwise Mr. Rogers, and Buckwheat from the ‘Little Rascals.’ His comedy chops got Hollywood’s attention and he made his film debut in 1982’s cop buddy film ’48 Hours.’ He followed it up with the comedies ‘Trading Places’ and ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ making him a bonafide movie star. He left ‘SNL’ in 1984 to focus on films. Starting the late 1990’s, he started making family friendly films including ‘Dr. Doolittle,’ ‘The Klumps,’ ‘The Nutty Professor,’ and voiced the ‘Shrek’ animated films. In 2006 he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the screen rendition of ‘Dreamgirls.’ Eddie is the father of 10 children and is engaged to Paige Butcher, the mother of his two youngest kids. He will be returning to host SNL on Dec. 21, 2019. It will be his first appearance on the show in the 35 years since his departure.
