Season 19 Bachelorette Gabby Windey and winner Erich Schwer have ended their engagement, People confirmed on November 4, 2022. The news came days after Gabby sparked rumors she and Erich had broken up after she was seen without her engagement ring while filming Dancing With the Stars season 31. Fans also speculated she and Erich had split after he wasn’t seen in the audience for the week’s filming. “I think life is just really busy for the both of us right now. So, I understand their concern but we’re just kinda, you know, going forward with each of our individual interests and supporting each other from afar,” Gabby told Fox News at the time.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen officially filed for divorce. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and the Victoria’s Secret model filed their divorce papers on October 29, 2022, with both confirming on their Instagram profiles. The divorce is settled in Florida where the ex-couple resides. Tom posted an Instagram story with the caption, “In recent days, my wife and I finalized our divorce from one another after 13 years of marriage. We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way. We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve. “We arrived at this decision to end our marriage after much consideration. Doing so is, of course painful, and difficult, like it is for so many people who go through the same thing everyday around the world. However, we wish only the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives that are yet to be written. And we kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate in what comes in the days and weeks ahead. Thank you.”

Gisele wrote a similar note on her Instagram story. She wrote, “With much gratitude for our time together, Tom and I have amicably finalized our divorce. My priority has always been and will continue to be my children whom I love with all my heart. We will continue co-parenting to give them love, care and attention they need. The decision to end a marriage is never easy, but we have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always.”

The couple’s impending divorce has been buzzing around ever since it was reported that the two were fighting over Tom’s decision to un-retire from the NFL. Tom and Gisele would have joint custody of their children: Benjamin Rein, 12, and Vivian Lake, 9. The quarterback also has one child with ex-Bridget Moynihan: John “Jack” Edward, 15, for whom Gisele acts as stepmom. A day before they filed for divorce, a source told Us Weekly on October 27, 2022, that Gisele gave Tom an ultimatum to choose their family or his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “Gisele told Tom either he leaves football to spend time with the family or she is gone for good,” the insider said. The source continued, “She doesn’t want him to continue to get injured and not be able to enjoy life in the future. She is doing it for her family.” A week before the report, Tom confirmed at a press conference for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he doesn’t plan to retire from the NFL any time soon. “I love the sport, I love the teammates, and I want to go do a good job for this team like I always have,” he said. “So, no retirement in my future,” he said at the time.

After 14 years together, Tia Mowry filed for divorce from Cory Hardrict. The Sister, Sister alum posted on her Instagram about their decision to separate. Simu Liu confirmed his breakup with Jade Bender two months after they went red carpet official. It’s not known when exactly the couple split, but the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star spoke about his mental health and the effect of the breakup at the tech conference Dreamforce last week in San Francisco, according to SFGate.com. “I experienced moments where I’m living my dream and it didn’t quite feel like I was where I needed to be with myself. I’m also going through a breakup. That’s probably also contributing to it but that’s okay, I’ll be okay.”

Simu was first linked to Jade Bender when they were spotted holding hands while leaving a West Hollywood restaurant together in June 2022. The pair announced in a joint statement on Friday, September 23, 2022, that their relationship had come to an end, Us Weekly reported. “With incredibly heavy hearts, we wanted to share that we have decided to go our separate ways. For anyone who has ever loved, knows this was a painful decision to make and not one taken lightly,” they wrote. “We understand that there will likely be a lot of questions about this decision — social media is definitely a highlight reel and much of our experiences together we have kept private as I’m sure most can understand. But we will share this — although this last year together has brought us so much joy and so many laughs, there has also been a significant amount of pain. Brittany confirmed the breakup in an Instagram post on September 15, 2022. “After time and consideration, Tyler and I have made the difficult decision to separate. We started this journey as best friends and our relationship will continue to be a priority not only for us but for our dog Charlie. The split came after Tyler claimed that his Selling the O.C. co-star, Kayla Cardona, tried to kiss him in season 1 of the Netflix reality TV show. A source told People before Brittany and Tyler announced their split that the storyline “broke them.” “They had issues before, but this is the final straw. [Brittany] has been trying to find the best time to file for divorce” and maintain their privacy, the source said. “Brittany never wanted Tyler on the show but he was adamant. He wanted to make a name for himself on his own terms.” The insider continued, “They’re fully over. All of the girls [on the show] are obsessed with him. He’s been trying to be really respectful but it’s taken a toll on his marriage 100 percent.” TMZ, however, reported that Brittany and Tyler’s separation was due to distance as Brittany lives in Los Angeles while Tyler lives in Orange County. The news that Emily Ratajkowski and her husband of four years, Sebastian Bear-McClard, had split broke in July 2022. On September 9, Page Six reported the couple had filed for divorce with notes to say that it’s contested and certain things will need to be litigated. It comes after Sebastian was entangled in a cheating scandal. “Yeah, he cheated,” a source close to the model claimed to Page Six. “He’s a serial cheater. It’s gross. He’s a dog.” Three days before filing for divorce, Em took to TikTok to comment on another user’s contention that the “patriarchy does not give space for the existence of love.” Emily said this video resonated with her, saying that “as a recently single person who is thinking about dating and stuff—I’ve really seen that with my friends and with the conversations kind of around it.” Emily and Sebastian share one child together, their son Sylvester.

A source close to the former Yankees player and the bodybuilder confirmed to UsWeekly on September 6, 2022, that the two went on their separate ways. “Alex and Kathryne split. There was no drama and it was amicable,” the source said. “They remain friends. They had fun the few months they dated, but it never got really serious. He’s doing just fine — getting into shape and focusing on family and his career.”

News broke of the two being together in June 2022. An insider told Us Weekly on June 1, 2022, that the two “haven’t put a title on their relationship yet and aren’t going around telling their friends they’re official,” and that they have been “hanging out for the last few months.” At the beginning of their relationship, the source added “They never get bored together and have a lot of fun,”  Along with being affectionate IRL, the two were “always leaving flirtatious comments on her IG. … He’s really into her.” The bodybuilder posted on Instagram a picture of her at the Oakland Coliseum on April 7, “Happy Opening Day ” A-Rod replied, “.” Their breakup also falls weeks after A-Rod’s ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez tied the knot with her former flame Ben Affleck. Leonardo DiCaprio and Camila Morrone have called it quits after more than four years together. People broke the news of the split on August 30, 2022. The couple, who had kept the details of their relationship very private, had been linked since December 2017 while vacationing in Aspen, Colorado. They made their first public appearance together when they sat in the front row at the Academy Awards in 2020. Sources told E! Online in December 2020 the couple was getting “serious” by moving in together.

A source close to the couple confirmed the breakup to People, however, no explanation for the breakup was given at the time and neither star had made statements. Social media was aflutter with speculation, though, with many joking that Camila had simply “aged out” for Leo—the model celebrated her 25th birthday in June 2022 and at 47, the Titanic star has a long history of dating women much younger than him. In fact, one Reddit user mapped out the ages of Leo’s past girlfriends showing that in the past 20 YEARS, he hasn’t dated anyone over the age of 25. He certainly has a type.

Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin are over after 25 years of marriage. Flavin filed for divorce from Stallone on August 19, 2022, in Palm Beach County, Florida. She filed for “for dissolution of marriage and other relief” from her ex-husband. Stallone and Flavin share three daughters: Scarlet, Sistine and Sophia. Stallone also had a son, Seargeoh, from his previous marriage to Sasha Czack. He also had a son Sage who died in 2012. He shared Sage with ex Starlin Wright.

“I love my family. We are amicably and privately addressing these personal issues,” Stallone said in a statement to People about his divorce from Flavin. Stallone and Flavin married in 1997. They started dating in 1988.

Iyanna McNeely & Jarett Jones

Iyanna McNeely and Jarrett Jones just announced their separation a year after appearing on Netflix’s Love is Blind. The duo posted on their Instagrams on August 17, 2022, that they have begun the process of separation. “After much thought, we’re saddened to share that we have separated and will begin the process of divorcing. While we have love for each other, our lives are going in different directions and that’s OK. Coming to this decision was far from easy and we will always wish each other the absolute best.” The statement continued, “We hope you all will give us some space as we close this chapter of our lives. Thank you to our close friends and family for loving us both through our experience. To the Love Is Blind family and Netflix, thank you for this unforgettable opportunity and support. The two met in the second season of Love is Blind and instantly connected. Florence Pugh just confirmed that she split with Zach Braff earlier this year after being together for 3 years. Thurston, 31, and Hersey, 28, met on Season 17 of the popular dating show, but didn’t start dating until months after the reality star sent Hersey home during week two of their season. The former couple first sparked rumors of a split after Thurston shared an Instagram Story seemingly addressing their breakup. “Statement: no we aren’t together,” she wrote in the Story, posted on June 21, 2022.

Hersey confirmed the news of their split with a statement of his own on Instagram. “I love being able to share special moments with you all—the funny ones. The happy ones. The outrageous, embarrassing, and heartfelt ones,” his statement began. “But I don’t know if it will ever get easier to share the sad ones. As Katie stated earlier, we are no longer dating. Calling it quits. Jason Momoa and Eiza Gonzalez split after four months of dating, PEOPLE confirmed on June 14, 2022. The couple, who reportedly started dating in February 2022—just one month after Momoa announced his separation from longtime partner, Lisa Bonet—reportedly broke things off after their different lifestyles got in the way of their romance. “They’re just very different people,” a source told PEOPLE.

A second insider went on to note, however, that there’s a chance the former couple could get back together, revealing that the pair are “hoping they might work it out” in the future. “They love each other very much having dated quietly for some time before it became public,” the source added. “They are in different life stages.” Momoa and Gonzalez’s split comes just one month after an earlier source confirmed to PEOPLE that they were “exclusive” after meeting “through work and mutual connections” earlier in the year. The Hannah Montana patriarch and his wife have been together since 1992 and share four kids: Miley, 29, Noah, 22, Trace, 33, Brandi, 34, and Braison, 27. The couple cited “irreconcilable differences” as a reason for the divorce in documents obtained by TMZ. 

The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer and his wife first filed for divorce in 2010 but Billy Ray withdrew the petition five months later. Just seven months after they were first seen together, a source confirmed to PEOPLE on February 17, 2022, that the “Drivers License” singer, 18, and the music video producer, 24, have separated. “They’ve been over for a bit now,” the insider told the site.

The musical pair were first linked in June 2021, when they were pictured getting cozy at the Space Jam 2 premiere party. Olivia introduced Adam as “her boyfriend,” and the two were “together the entire night,” insiders told E! They will remain friendly; there’s no bad blood and no drama. It just didn’t work out for them.”

A source told In Touch at the time that the couple split because Woodley felt “neglected” in their relationship due to Rodgers’ career. “While Shailene is supportive of Aaron’s career, he put football first and they were barely spending any time together,” the insider said. “She felt he neglected their relationship. Neither of them was happy.”

The split came after another insider told People that the couple, who started dating in 2020 and confirmed their engagement in February 2021, have a “non-traditional” love. “They have a different, non-traditional relationship,” the insider said. Pam left Dan and his kids without a single goodbye. Now the kids are heartbroken.”

The two married in October 2017. “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” Momoa and Bonet said in a joint statement on the Aquaman star’s Instagram. (Bonet doesn’t have social media.) “And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.”

A source told Us Weekly on January 11, 2022, that Hamlin—the daughter of actors Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin—and Booker, a contestant on Love Island season 4, had ended their relationship after two years together. They were first linked in April 2019. The split came after Booker spent the holidays with Hamlin’s family. “A few days later, they were broken up. They were so in love,” the insider said. The source also called the split “a shock to some of their closest friends.”

On November 18, 2022, the “Anti-Hero” singer posted a statement on her Instagram stories about her Eras tour ticket sales. “It goes without saying that I’m extremely protective of my fans.  We’ve been doing this for decades together and over the years, I’ve brought so many elements of my career in house,” she wrote. “I’ve done this SPECIFICALLY to improve the quality of my fans’ experience by doing it myself with my team who care as much about my fans as I do. It’s really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse.” 

She continued explaining the strenuous outcomes of her fans trying to attain tickets, “There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this demand and we were assured they could. It’s truly amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets, but it really pisses me off that a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them.”

Why was Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour General sale canceled? On November 17, Ticketmaster tweeted that the general public sale of the Eras Tour was canceled because of inventory. Or rather, lack thereof. “Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, tomorrow’s public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been canceled,” the tweet read.

Taylor announced The Eras Tour in November 2022, which is her first tour in over five years. The tour—which was announced less than two weeks after the release of her most recent album, Midnights—is a “journey through the musical eras” of Swift’s past 10 albums: 2006’s Taylor Swift; 2008’s Fearless; 2010’s Speak Now; 2012’s Red; 2014’s 1989; 2017’s Reputation; 2019’s Lover; 2020’s Folklore and Evermore; and 2022’s Midnights. Due to the current health crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, Swift’s most recent four albums—Lover, Folklore, Evermore and Midnights—will be performed on tour for the first time on The Eras Tour.

The tour had two presales before the general sale. Fans were encouraged to sign up for Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” system which would give them the chance for an exclusive presale code. Only a certain percentage of the people who signed up were emailed a code to use during the sale. However, when the presale started, fans waited in the queue for hours, some presale codes didn’t work, multiple crashes impacted the website and seats were selling out at an exuberant rate. Fans who had a Capital One card had a second chance to obtain tickets, but like the first sale, the presale sold out in a matter of minutes. 

Fans expressed their frustrations on social media towards the ticketing company. “You’re the problem. It’s you,” one fan tweeted in reference to Taylor’s single “Anti-Hero.” Another fan pointed out that the site was supposed to limit the number of tickets sold during the presales. “did u guys like forget the point of a presale is to sell a limited number of tickets? this is ur ENTIRE job … so unfair to everyone,” they tweeted. 

In a since-deleted blog post, Ticketmaster explained why the presales were overwhelming. They claimed that 3.5 million people signed up for the verified-fan presale and that it was the most sign-ups in Ticketmaster history. Only a fraction of the people got a pre-sale code, and typically 40% of fans invited to purchase tickets at the presale actually do so, and they buy an average of three tickets. “Historically, working with Verified Fan invite codes has worked as we’ve been able to manage the volume coming into the site to shop for tickets,” the site wrote.

The demand alarmed Taylor’s team to add more dates to the tour, however, the site kept on crashing for 15% of the users who were waiting online. In the end, the Eras Tour sold 2 million tickets in one day, which is the most tickets sold for an artist on the website. The site also reported that according to the traffic on the website during the sales, Taylor would have to perform 900 times at a stadium to accommodate every fan who was trying to get a ticket. Greg Maffei, the chairman of Live Nation Entertainment, Ticketmaster’s parent company went on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” to explain that the problems were due to Taylor’s impact. “It’s a function of Taylor Swift,” he said. “The site was supposed to open up for 1.5 million verified Taylor Swift fans. We had 14 million people hit the site, including bots, which are not supposed to be there.”

On November 18, the New York Times reported that the Department of Justice is investigating Live Nation Entertainment’s abuse of power. Though the investigation predates Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour disaster, the situation brings to light a bigger question of the live event company’s influence on the music landscape as a monopoly. Lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called out the merger deal between Live Nation and Ticketmaster when she tweeted, “Daily reminder that Ticketmaster is a monopoly, its merger with LiveNation should never have been approved, and they need to be reigned in. Break them up.”

Holmes was born on February 3, 1984, in Washington, D.C. Her mom, Noel, was a Congressional committee staffer, whereas her dad, Christian, was a vice president at the energy giant Enron before moving onto government positions at agencies like USAID. When she was a child, Holmes and her family moved from Washington, D.C. to Houston, Texas. Even at an early age, Holmes had an instinct for invention, often filling up entire notebooks with drafts for plans and designs. “What I really want out of life is to discover something new, something that mankind didn’t know was possible to do,” she wrote in a letter to her father when she was just nine years old.

Throughout high school, Holmes had a habit of staying up late to study on a regular basis. She soon rose to the top of her class and even launched her own business, selling C++ compilers (software that interprets computer code) to Chinese schools. Holmes began taking Mandarin courses in high school and convinced Stanford University to admit her into their summer program, which ended in a trip to Beijing.

It was around this time that Holmes decided she wanted to pursue medicine like her great-great-grandfather, a surgeon. However, she quickly realized that she was afraid of needles. Later, Holmes revealed that this is what inspired her to launch her company, Theranos, which sought to revolutionize blood testing with technology that purportedly required only a finger pinprick to detect medical conditions from cancer to high cholesterol.

Following her summer program with Stanford, Holmes decided to enroll at the university as a chemical engineering major in college. She spent the summer after her freshman year interning at the Genome Institute in Singapore, where she tested blood samples for SARS-CoV-1. As a sophomore, she filed her first patent application for a wearable drug-delivery patch and founded her company, Real-Time Cures, which would later become what was commonly known as Theranos. By the next semester, she had dropped out of Stanford entirely to pursue her work with Theranos full time.

After launching Theranos, Holmes was introduced to venture capitalists through her former Stanford advisor, Channing Roberston. The young entrepreneur quickly began to secure funding from prominent investors, raising around $6 million in venture capital by the end of 2004. Over the course of the next decade, it is believed Holmes amassed over $700 million in funding for Theranos.

For years, Theranos was shrouded in secrecy; there was no public company website or press releases, and investors were not given any details about how her technology really worked. It wasn’t until 2013 that the public face of Theranos grew when it partnered with Walgreens to establish in-store blood sample collection centers. It was around this time that Holmes started making headlines: she gave talks, spoke on panels and graced the covers of Fortune and Forbes, which named her the youngest self-made woman billionaire at the age of 30. Her company, Theranos, had a reported valuation of $9 billion at its peak.

But something wasn’t quite adding up. Ian Gibbons, Theranos’ chief scientist and one of the company’s earliest hires, found flaws in the company technology and expressed concerns to Holmes that tests weren’t ready for the general public to use, according to a Vanity Fair investigative report by Nick Bilton. Outside experts also began to share their reservations about Theranos. These doubts came to a head in 2015, when medical research professor John Ioannidis, and later Eleftherios Diamandis, questioned the validity of her company’s technology.

Later that year, Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou published a damning investigative report into Theranos, which alleged that the company’s blood-testing machine, Edison, was not capable of providing accurate testing results. Instead, Theranos was using traditional blood testing machines to run its tests. It is alleged that Holmes knew, yet continued to lie to her investors, doctors and patients in an effort to raise capital.

Following the WSJ report, the FDA launched an investigation into Theranos. The 2015 investigation resulted in multiple observed violations of FDA Title 21 Regulations. By January of 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services also launched an investigation into a Theranos laboratory in Newark, California, where they uncovered irregularities in testing. Months later, CMS officially banned Holmes from owning or operating a clinical blood-testing laboratory for two years. In the years to come, Theranos continued to face a string of legal challenges and sanctions from multiple medical authorities, state and federal organizations, investors and patients. After years of lawsuits, what remained of the company was dissolved in September 2018.

Atlanta has always been cool, but now people around the country are catching on. In recent years it’s had a boom of new places to play, eat, and stay. It offers respite from the hubbub of Atlanta in the form of a colorful rooftop bar, Julep, and a soothing garden patio bar, Willow. There you’ll find boutiques like Modern Mystic (crystals and tarot galore) and the Village, a collective that sells Black-owned lifestyle brands such as accessories and home decor. To get something really unique, head to Kudzu in Decatur which has myriad vintage and antique offerings.

Need to treat yourself? Visit Ann Mashburn’s boutique located in the Westside Provisions Development. Or, head to Abbey Glass, owned by the eponymous Atlanta-based designer, in the Buckhead Village shopping district, where you’ll find dreamy dresses. There are other high-end options there, too, such as Billy Reid, Hermes, and Christian Louboutin.

When it comes to Instagrammability, it’s a choose-your-vibe situation in Atanta—there are plenty of vibes to choose from. If you’re feeling artsy and like working with lots of angles, the High Museum of Art (one of the largest art hubs in the southeast) is beautiful inside and out and is photograph-friendly. Or, go to the BeltLine’s Eastside trail which is frenetic (watch out for the bikers) but has gorgeous skyline views and cool public art on display.

Don’t overlook Atlanta’s pocket neighborhoods, either, which have charming historic homes ranging from Craftsman to Queen Anne cottages. Park on the street (where legal — keep an eye out for no parking signs), go for a stroll, and snap away. In Summerhill, a neighborhood adjacent to downtown, and nearby Cabbagetown there are a host of vibrant murals. Oakland Cemetery can be found in Grant Park and is one of the most sneakily beautiful places to snap photos in all of Atlanta. In Midtown is Piedmont Park which has iconic skyline views (though not as iconic as the Jackson Street bridge) and plenty of benches to take in the scenery. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is adjacent to the park, and the $25 fee is totally worth it to spend a few hours among the photogenic blooms.

Atlanta’s food scene is a gem that keeps getting noticed at a national level year after year. Many of the restaurants are seasonally-driven, serving dishes with locally-grown produce as much as possible, and have killer cocktail and wine programs. They also take their design seriously, so expect to feast in a place where the decor’s beauty matches the dishes served.

One of the standouts in both the design and food categories is Lucian, perfectly situated at the busy corner of Peachtree and Pharr Roads. Part bookstore, part wine bar, it’s a sophisticated spot to sip a glass of wine and people-watch on a Friday night. For a veggie-forward meal in a dreamy soft blue-hued dining room, there’s Redbird in West Midtown. Don’t worry, Redbird serves things like steak and chicken, too, but it’s the veggie dishes like crispy fried mushrooms in chickpea batter and roasted garlic hummus. In the lobby of the recently opened Kimpton Shane Hotel in Midtown is its restaurant, Hartley, which has creative bites and craft cocktails in a grand atmosphere and a fun vibe.

To really get to know Atlanta, head a little north of the city to Buford Highway, a busy stretch of road lined with international restaurants. Everything from Lee’s Bakery, a Vietnamese spot specializing in banh mi, to Northern China Eatery with dumplings galore, and La Pastorcita with delicious tacos can be found.

Holmes, a Stanford University dropout, launched the biomedical business Theranos—a combination of the words “therapy” and “diagnosis”—in 2003 when she was just 19 years old. Her dream was to transform the healthcare industry by developing an at-home device that could test for a variety of diseases and ailments using only a prick of blood, instead of requiring needles and countless vials for testing. To bring her vision to life, Holmes enlisted the help of scientists and engineers who spent years trying to create the device.

However, it soon became clear that creating such a device was difficult—and costly. In order to secure some initial funding, Holmes presented the device in 2006 in Switzerland to a board of investors. Except, at the time, the Theranos technology wasn’t officially working. Holmes and her team decided to cheat the demonstration by providing diagnostics from a previously successful test run. The presentation was enough to secure the additional investments to fund Theranos and its scientists for some time; yet Holmes continued to scale the business without her device ever working properly.

On the outside, Theranos was everything Holmes had dreamed it would become: successful, reputable and valued at billions. Holmes herself began to deliver panel discussions, interviews and appear on the cover of magazines like Fortune and Forbes, with an impressive net worth, to boot. But behind the scenes, the employees of Theranos were worried about the company’s public claims about a technology they knew still wasn’t operating the right way.

By 2015, the ruse began to fall apart. Theranos was shrouded in controversy when The Wall Street Journal’s John Carreyrou published a damning report on the company, which claimed that its blood testing device—known as the Edison—was unable to test blood samples successfully. Instead, Carreyrou alleged that Theranos was running its samples through traditional testing methods. The journalist went on to publish a series of reports casting doubts on the company’s technology, many of which were compiled into his 2018 book, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. The book went on to serve as the basis of the ABC News podcast, The Dropout, which Hulu’s scripted series of the same name is based on.

Following Carreyrou’s reports, the FDA launched an investigation into Theranos. The 2015 investigation resulted in multiple observed violations of FDA Title 21 Regulations. The following year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services also launched an investigation into a Theranos laboratory in Newark, California, where they uncovered irregularities in testing. Months later, CMS officially banned Holmes from owning or operating a clinical blood-testing laboratory for two years.

In the years to come, Theranos continued to face a string of legal challenges and sanctions from multiple medical authorities, state and federal organizations, investors and patients. After years of lawsuits, what remained of the company was dissolved in September 2018 and Holmes was officially charged with fraud.

Is Elizabeth Holmes in jail?

On November 18, 2022, Elizabeth Holmes was sentenced to 11 years and three months behind bars, commencing her sentence on April 27, 2023, perhaps to give her enough time to give birth to her second child, with which she was pregnant at the time of sentencing. It’s less than what federal prosecutors had asked for.

In a court filing released before her sentencing, they wrote: “Time and again, she chose deceit over candor. She forged her own endorsements. She preyed on hopes of her investors that a young, dynamic entrepreneur had changed healthcare. She leveraged the credibility of her illustrious board. And, through her deceit, she attained spectacular fame, adoration, and billions of dollars of wealth.” Prosecutors had originally asked for her to be imprisoned for 15 years and a payment of $800 million.

Ahead of her sentencing, Holmes told the San Jose court: “I loved Theranos. It was my life’s work,” she said. “The people I tried to get involved with Theranos were the people I loved and respected the most. I am devastated by my failings.” She also apologized to the employees, investors and patients of Theranos. “I’m so, so sorry. I gave everything I had to build our company and to save our company,” she said. “I regret my failings with every cell in my body.” She was found guilty of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud on January 3, 2022.

Holmes will be assigned to a prison by the Federal Bureau of Prisons based on factors such as location, space, her lack of criminal history and the nonviolent nature of her crime.

Where is Elizabeth Holmes now?

While Holmes wasn’t in jail at the time of The Dropout’s release on Hulu, the former Theranos CEO was out on $500,000 bail. Holmes was believed to be residing at her $135 million California estate with her husband, William “Billy” Evans, their baby boy and two dogs. She kept a low profile in the neighborhood while awaiting sentencing, which boasts seven separate mansions sprawled across 74 acres. The Silicon Valley enclave also contains four swimming pools, a tennis court and a private orchard.

At its heart though, it’s a story about love, alienation, societal demands versus personal values, and the need to be seen by at least one person who understands that we are who we are, not monsters, but not normal, either.

Through director Luca Guadagnino’s compassionate, inquisitive perspective (he also directed the TV series We Are Who We Are), he captures all the magnetism, gruesomeness, allure and ferocity of these two bedeviled protagonists. In Bones and All, there is a fantasy unfolding. Isn’t it every teenage dream to fall into a dramatic, lusty love affair and escape the monotony of school and family life in a beat-up, beautiful old Chevy?

The silver screen has explored the teenage runaway fantasy for decades and, to be more precise, teenage delinquents with a murderous appetite: alienated adolescents gone wild, the epic landscape and endless highways that open up once the rubber hits the road. It’s an ideal lens to view adolescence through; a seemingly infinite series of intersecting roads in which young men and women work out what their moral values are and embrace their own quirky traits and each other’s, all while venturing through unexplored terrain physically and metaphorically.

Holly (Sissy Spacek) and Kit (Martin Sheen) went on a hell-raising, murderous road trip in the 1973 movie Badlands. Upping sticks from her shambolic South Dakota home, 15-year-old Holly departs her father’s home (her mother had died of pneumonia years earlier) with Korean War veteran Kit, a 25-year-old garbage collector. After killing Holly’s father, the duo set out for the Badlands of Montana, trigger-happy and hightailin’ it from the law.

Over a decade later, Heathers took many of the same elements of a murderous mayhem-meets-teen road-trip movie and twisted them into a fantastically warped coming-of-age narrative. The 1988 cult classic introduced us to the alienated outcast J.D (Christian Slater) and (wonderfully) bad girl Veronica (Winona Ryder), bonded through their outsider status and the burning desire for revenge on the Heathers (yes, three girls named Heather). Viewers may recall Veronica’s droll admission once the bloodshed in high school is beyond all control: “Dear Diary, my teen angst bullshit has a body count.” It was a gothic fairy tale of sorts, a dark comedy of the bleakest nature.

In Bones and All, Lee and Maren’s “teen angst bullshit” also lead to a very gory body count. In any other director’s realm, this film might have turned into a sensational, bloody Halloween affair, but it doesn’t, owing to the deeply sensitive, romantically minded Guadagnino. The Italian director has more than proven his compassionate rendering of adolescence in all its awkward, gorgeous blundering, not least in Call Me By Your Name, also starring Chalamet (and that peach scene) and We Are Who We Are. In the latter, he follows the troubled, lovelorn teenager Fraser (played by Jack Dylan Grazer) and the repressed, curious, sexually ambiguous Caitlin (Jordan Kristine Seamon) to a nostalgic, trippy R’n’B soundtrack by Devonte Hynes (Blood Orange).

The 1995 indie film, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival, opened with James Duval (playing character Jordan White) and Rose McGowan (as Amy Blue) slam dancing in a goth-punk club to the thundering industrial beat of Nine Inch Nails. As they depart in their beaten-up car, stocked with cigarettes and fast food, Xavier Red’s body slams down on their windscreen mid-brawl. Desperate to escape his brawny attackers, he leaps into the car and demands the couple take him with them. There’s sex, gory death, and brilliantly sarcastic one-liners: “Sometimes I feel like the city is sucking away at my soul,” admits Amy; or later, “My mom used to be a heroin addict, now she’s a Scientologist.”

Maybe the Chevy in Bones and All is an acquired taste. Still, the dual desires to spend all our waking moments with our lover and the liberation from the obligations of study, work and grinding through survival speak to the experience of most teenagers. Bones And All is the latest, and by far the most memorable, to depict alienated, lustful teenage devotion through a story of runaway delinquents. That we must sculpt an inner and outer persona that morphs and shapes to our innermost desires while also operating within the framework of a moral and opinionated society is—in a way—a lesson all of us solitary-natured people learn whether on the road or not.

1. Get Ready to Relax

Tailoring Loosens Up

The past decade-plus brought about a sea change in men’s suiting, there’s no denying it.  If you kept a weather eye out, you often came across razor-sharp, super-slim suits everywhere from Thom Browne to J. Crew.

Next year though, things are loosening up ever-so-slightly for next year (if collections from the likes of designer Willy Chavarria are any indication, for example). So, think fits with more room to move—remember that more relaxed clothes can still be tailored to the proper length while following acceptable menswear rules. 

Think back to old-school suits of the ’40s and ’50s—silhouettes were more relaxed but weren’t baggy or sloppy. Much the same appears to be on the horizon for 2023.

2. Retro Reigns Supreme

Say Hello to the ‘80s and ‘90s

Fashion is cyclical, often to the extreme, and if it’s jarring to think about styles from the ‘90s being mined for trend inspiration, join the club. Big-name long-running brands like L.L. Bean—a company as popular now as it’s ever been – already welcomed back the 1990s with archive collections last year, and those throwback styles aren’t going anywhere any time soon. 

What can you expect? Among other things, be on the lookout for color-blocked designs in vivid shades, just like your mom wore to take you to the park way back in the day. That goes for everything from outerwear to sportswear, like Ralph Lauren’s iconic (and very much en vogue) logo polo shirt. And that’s another thing: Logos are back in a big way, and the more visible, the better.

3. Saddle Up With Western Wear

Go Back to the Wild West In 2023

To go forwards in matters of style, you’ve got to go back – and you don’t need a Delorean to do it. As with the rugged #menswear revival of the mid-aughts, styles that merge functionality and toughness are roaring back in a big way – and none moreso than Western wear. 

Perhaps you’ve seen Western wear on the likes of Phoebe Bridgers – it’s a style that can work for just about anyone, whether you prefer an ornately stitched shirt or some hard-wearing Western boots. The style is pleasantly retro, from another era and yet perfectly suited to today’s more casual standards of dressing. 

Put it this way: When you want a change of pace from an Oxford shirt or a lightweight spring chambray shirt, an eye-catching shirt with characteristic Western snaps and stitching is an on-trend move to try out. 

4. What’s Old Is New

Bigger Is Better In the World of Men’s Pants

If you’ve spent any time online in the past month or so, perhaps you heard a buzzing in the distance, the chatter of the much-hyped (and very cool) “return” of J. Crew under new creative director Brendon Babenzien. 

While one collection from one brand is but a taste of what’s to come, there was one item in particular from J. Crew’s fall collection that sent #menswear Twitter into a frenzy: The J. Crew Giant Chino, the brand’s widest fit and an homage to the ’90s.

The fact that those pants in particular are currently on backorder is seriously impressive stuff, but it speaks to other men’s fashion trends for 2023 as well. Notably, while slim or slim-straight pants are nearly always flattering on many guys, more relaxed styles in the pants department are having a major moment. 

Again, think relaxed but don’t go baggy or sloppy—take your proper pant size, pair them with some footwear that delivers some bulk (chunky loafers or combat boots, anyone?) and be prepared to field more than a few compliments and questions about this new (old) breed of pants.

5. Performance Meets Style

Anything Goes with Athleisure in 2023

Stop us if you’ve heard this one (or something like it) before: Between the pandemic and a massive shift to working from home, casual performance menswear took center stage in 2020, and 2021, and 2022. And yes, as far as men’s fashion trends for 2023 are concerned, those performance menswear picks aren’t going anywhere. 

Perhaps you find yourself now wearing a crewneck sweatshirt or a stretch merino tee on the daily — at home on Zoom or back in the office from time to time. And perhaps you’ve foregone dress trousers in favor of stretch chino pants with a concealed drawstring waistband (belt no longer required). 

Mainstream brands like Public Rec and upscale trendsetters like the famed John Elliott are going beyond the gym in a big way in that regard, but no one will be any the wiser that you’re actually insanely comfortable, not stuffed into pre-pandemic-era dress pants.

It used to be, shoes were clearly separated into easily identifiable categories. Dress shoes, work boots, athletic sneakers, perhaps casual sneakers, all easy to define, right? But when something in the menswear tides shifts and then continues to stick around, it’s definitely a trend worth noting and wearing as one of the best 2023 men’s fashion trends, naturally.

What do we mean by that? Well, where once you had your favorite pair of sneakers and a separate, favorite pair of boots, for instance, those styles are now being mashed up in ever-more impressive ways.

If you know nothing about crypto but watched 2022’s Superbowl commercials, you might be familiar with at least the letters FTX. Don’t miss out on the next big thing.” In another commercial from 2021, Brady and Bündchen (still a couple at this point) call their friends to ask if “they’re in” on crypto. Here’s everything we know about Tom Brady’s FTX investments and the other celebrities embroiled in the company’s potentially shady operations.

Tom Brady’s FTX Investment

Tom Brady’s FTX investment began when he and his wife, Gisele Bündchen, bought an undisclosed equity stake in FTX in June 2021. “It’s an incredibly exciting time in the crypto-world and Sam and the revolutionary FTX team continue to open my eyes to the endless possibilities,” Brady said in a press release at the time. “This particular opportunity showed us the importance of educating people about the power of crypto while simultaneously giving back to our communities and planet. We have the chance to create something really special here, and I can’t wait to see what we’re able to do together.”

Bündchen added: “It was fascinating getting to know more about the crypto universe! Cryptocurrency will become more and more familiar to all of us as time goes on. What attracted me most about this partnership was the potential to apply resources to help regenerate the Earth, and enable people to lead better lives, therefore generating real transformation in our society.”

This announcement of their partnership was followed by a commercial for the exchange in September 2021. In the advertisement, both he and Bündchen call all their friends to ask if “they’re in” on crypto. “I’m getting into crypto with FTX, you in?” Brady tells a friend over the phone.

In 2021 and 2022, FTX and its CEO Sam Bankman-Fried were the toast of the crypto industry. The Bahamas-based exchange was one of the biggest in the world, having been founded just three years prior in 2019 by Bankman-Fried, then 28 years old. At its peak in 2021, it had more than one million users and revenue of over $1 billion, making it the third-largest exchange by volume. But after news broke on November 3 that FTX could be facing a liquidity crisis, investors scrambled to withdraw their holdings, demanding withdrawals worth $6 billion. FTX promptly froze all accounts. On Friday, November 11, 2022, Bankman-Fried stood down as CEO and the company filed for bankruptcy with potentially more than one million creditors in the lurch.

This declaration sent shockwaves through an industry that has been struggling to grasp mainstream appeal and credibility, sparking government investigations and unearthing potential criminal charges. It’s particularly shocking given that Bankman-Fried was regarded as a prodigy in crypto. He’d become one of the richest people in the world by the time he turned 30 with an estimated fortune of $24 billion. “Here we are, with one of the richest people in the world, his net worth dropping to zero, his business dropping to zero,” said Jared Ellias, a bankruptcy professor at Harvard Law School, per the New York Times. “The velocity of this failure is just unbelievable.” It’s estimated FTX could owe money to more than one million people and organizations, according to bankruptcy documents filed in court.

In a class-action lawsuit filed in Florida, Brady, Bündchen, David and other celebrities make up a list of those accused of defrauding investors who lost money after FTX’s sudden collapse. It alleges FTX used famous faces to tout the exchange and coax naïve investors into “a Ponzi scheme”. Other celebrities include NBA star Stephen Curry; Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence; baseball player Shohei Ohtani; tennis champion Naomi Osaka; and broadcaster and former basketball player Shaquille O’Neal. Kevin O’Leary, a host of Shark Tank is also named in the complaint, which was filed on November 15 in the Southern District of Florida. The lawsuit alleges that these sports and TV celebrities brought instant credibility to FTX, and should be held just as culpable as its disgraced now former-CEO Bankman-Fried. Per Reuters, the suit also claims that FTX’s yield-bearing accounts represent unregistered securities under federal and Florida law.

“Part of the scheme employed by the FTX Entities involved utilizing some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment—like these Defendants—to raise funds and drive American consumers to invest…pouring billions of dollars into the deceptive FTX platform to keep the whole scheme afloat,” the lawsuit claims,” per the Associated Press. “The Deceptive FTX Platform maintained by the FTX Entities was truly a house of cards, where the FTX Entities shuffled customer funds between their opaque affiliated entities, using new investor funds obtained through investments in the [yield-bearing accounts] and loans to pay interest to the old ones and to attempt to maintain the appearance of liquidity,” the lawsuit alleges.

In an email to CBS News, Adam Moskowitz, the attorney leading the class action alleged: “FTX were geniuses at public relations and marketing and knew that such a massive Ponzi scheme—larger than the Madoff scheme—could only be successful with the help and promotion of the most famous, respected, and beloved celebrities and influencers in the world.”

From the information provided in the lawsuit alone, it’s unclear precisely what the financial relationship was between FTX and these celebrity endorsers. Still, experts warn that being a spokesperson for crypto carries more weight and implications than, say, sports drinks. “Selling an asset that is a financial instrument … is not the same thing as selling sneakers,” Charles Whitehead, professor at Cornell Law School, who is not involved in the case, told CNN Business. “There are anti-fraud and consumer-protection rules for selling bad sneakers. There are more restrictive rules when you’re talking about selling financial assets. All these celebrities who are running around and doing these sorts of sponsorships should stop and ask a securities lawyer.”

They certainly aren’t the only celebrities who’ve fallen into hot water over their promotion of crypto. In October 2022, Kim Kardashian was ordered to pay $1.26 million in penalties, disgorgement, and interest for unlawfully promoting crypto assets offered and sold by EthereumMax, without disclosing the fact that she’d been paid to do so. “The federal securities laws are clear that any celebrity or other individual who promotes a crypto asset security must disclose the nature, source, and amount of compensation they received in exchange for the promotion,” said Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, in a press release at the time. “Investors are entitled to know whether the publicity of a security is unbiased, and Ms. Kardashian failed to disclose this information.”

Of course, the celebrity engagements of 2022 come after a year of star-studded engagements the year before from famous couples like Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker; Britney Spears and Sam Asghari; and Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers. Antoni was first linked with Kevin in 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns brought them closer together. “We went from being in a relationship and each having our own apartments and not having a dog, to living in the same place with a dog,” he told People. “It escalated quickly. She captioned the photo, “i do, bon.” The Funny Girl actress also made an Instagram story with the caption “@bonnie_chance you make me happier than i knew was possible. i love you.” Famous friends who attended the poolside proposal include Ben Platt and Kaitlyn Dever, as well as her brother Jonah Hill. 

Beanie and Bonnie have been together since 2018. During an interview for Booksmart with People in May 2019, she discussed the importance of LGBTQIA+ representation in the movie while also defending her love for her girlfriend at the time. “The only love scene in the film is a queer love scene, and that’s so radical. By doing that, you’re asking that to be the norm. Getting hitched! Rita Ora and Taika Waititi are engaged after a year and a half of dating, according to the UK Sun. The “Finish Line” singer, 31, and the Thor: Ragnarok director, 46, almost proposed “simultaneously” the each other, an insider told the site in a report published on June 8, 2022.

“They didn’t do a whole, ‘Will you marry me?’ thing and an Instagram post,” the source shared. “There’s no ring or big build-up. They just got closer and closer and eventually said to each other almost simultaneously, ‘I want to marry you’. It’s actually really romantic and just exactly the way they are together.”

Now, the happy couple are reportedly planning a “low-key” ceremony abroad before hosting a celebrity-packed celebration later down the line. “So the plan is to marry abroad, as soon as their respective projects end, with their closest friends and family around them,” the insider continued. “And then there will be a big celebration in London at a later stage, when they get the chance, with all their famous friends there. But for now it’s about getting down the aisle and making things official. There are a few details to iron out, but it’s coming soon and it’ll be beautifully intimate and perfectly them.”

Ora and Waititi “couldn’t be happier,” to make things official, the source added. “This isn’t about them doing a big showy thing and crowing about it beforehand. It’s just about them being in love and deciding the time is right to formalize their relationship.”

The pair first sparked dating rumors in the spring of 2021, when they were spotted getting cozy in Sydney, Australia. They seemingly confirmed their romance when they were photographed kissing on a balcony that year, while also sparking speculation of a throuple with actress Tessa Thompson, who took part in the steamy makeout sesh. Ora and Waititi eventually went on to make their red carpet debut that summer while attending the August 2021 premiere of The Suicide Squad.

Anthony’s engagement comes a month after his ex-wife, Jennifer Lopez, got engaged to Ben Affleck in April 2022. Entertainment Tonight was the first to report the exciting news after the couple, who have been together since 2019, walked the red carpet at the 2022 BAFTA Awards on Sunday, March 13. Hiddleston, 41, and Ashton, 37, were spotted walking side by side at the event. In photos from the evening, Ashton can be seen wearing a diamong ring on her left hand (you can see a photo of the ring below).

The Loki star and the Handmaid’s Tale actress have been linked since meeting on the set of the West End’s 2019 production of Betrayal. Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are engaged, according to Life & Style magazine. The publication reported on February 17, 2022, that the Swift and Alwyn were engaged after five years of dating. The engagement came after the couple, who started dating in 2016, sparked engagement rumors in January 2022 after they were seen on a romantic, three-day vacation in Cornwall, England. “I’m aware people want to know about that side of things. I think we have been successfully very private, and that has now sunk in for people … but I really prefer to talk about work,” Alwyn said of his relationship to Swift in an interview with British Vogue in 2018.

A source told Us Weekly in 2019 that Swift wanted a “simple” engagement ring if she and Alwyn ever got engaed. “Taylor isn’t interested in a big obnoxious ring,” the insider said.. “She’d like something elegant and simple.” The source also claimed at the time that Swift had has “been collecting bridal magazines since she was a little girl,” so she’s ready to “finally get down to the business of planning a wedding” whenever an engagement comes.
