US stocks opened higher today, set to cap off a strong month and a remarkable second quarter for Wall Street. The Dow opened higher by 212 points, or 0.48%. The broader S&P 500 rose 0.34% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 0.46%, rising to intraday record highs. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq last week both hit all-time highs, and the indexes were set to notch another record. The market is set to finish the second quarter on a high note, posting a major rebound after a dismal first quarter. After tumbling in March and April as President Donald Trump's tariff policy shocked Wall Street, stocks then recovered their losses across May and June. At the halfway point into the year, the mood is remarkably different from three months ago. Read more here: https://cnn.it/4lpZwkt

Luckin Coffee, the fast-growing chain that beat Starbucks at its own game in China, is entering the United States. Its first two US locations are opening Monday — both in New York City — marking an escalation in competition against Starbucks and other coffee chains, such as Dutch Bros., that have successfully built a loyal following in targeting Gen Z drinkers with TikTok-worthy drinks at affordable prices. Founded in 2017, Luckin’s menu is filled with usual coffeehouse staples, including cold brews, hot coffee and matcha options. Its beverages in China are about 30% cheaper than those offered by Starbucks. In 2023, Luckin’s revenue in China surpassed Starbucks for the first time which was a significant blow for the Seattle chain that is still struggling to crack the market. However, although Luckin’s formula has proven to be successful at home, it remains to be seen if the same will happen here, especially with Starbucks having more than a 50-year headstart. Zohran Mamdani, the favorite to become New York City's next mayor after winning the Democratic primary, has a contentious plan to create a network of city-owned grocery stores. But it's less radical than critics portray, some food policy and grocery industry experts say. Mamdani has proposed five municipally owned stores, one in each New York City borough, to offer groceries at lower prices to customers with limited access to supermarkets. In some New York City neighborhoods, more than 30% of people are food insecure. The proposal has been blasted as a “‘Soviet’ style disaster-in-waiting,” “farcical” and “economically delusional”, with some supermarket chains threatening to close stores if Mamdani is elected. However, Mamdani is drawing on government-owned and subsidized models that already exist in the United States. “This is more common than people are aware of,” said Nevin Cohen, director of the City University of New York’s Urban Food Policy Institute. “There’s a wide spectrum of food retail establishments that could be created by or with the support of city government.” Read more: https://cnn.it/4esTZqh

D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89. His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home. Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions. “Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner’s circle,” his family said in a statement. “Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.” Read more: https://cnn.it/44Dw18y
