You’d Be Surprised by How Much Anna Wintour Makes From the Met Gala
Anna Wintour is one of those names that you know, even though, considering her position, you might be surprised that you do. The British-American media executive, who has served as the global chief content officer of Condé Nast since 2020 and the Global editorial director of Vogue, is perhaps better known for being the inspiration behind the famous character Meryl Streep played in The Devil Wears Prada. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is probably up to you.
Wintour is also widely regarded as the most powerful woman in publishing and is the lead chairperson of the Met Gala. That’s a lot of power and a lot of influence. But it is perhaps fair to wonder if that translates to a lot of money.

How much is Anna Wintour worth? How much was her salary at Vogue and Condé Nast? How much is her fortune these days? Here’s what we know.
Anna Wintour’s net worth
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Anna Wintour’s net worth is $50 million, and that can all be traced to her trajectory in the fashion industry. Not that she had it all that hard, considering her father was The Evening Standard editor Charles Wintour and her stepmother, Audrey Slaughter, founded three different publications: Petticoat, Honey, and Over 21.
New York magazine reported that Wintour was getting paid $2 million annually as editor-in-chief of Vogue in 2005, but reports indicate she is now being paid a $4 million annual salary, due to her several promotions. Business Insider also reported that Wintour gets a $200,000 annual “allowance” for her workwear clothes.
Wintour has long been credited for turning Vogue into one of the most important fashion staples in the industry, which explains the numbers. Before her position there, she worked at Harper’s Bazaar and New York Magazine and also, briefly, as an editor at British Vogue, among other recognizable names in the fashion industry.
What was revolutionary about Wintour was the way she mixed high-end fashion with street fashion and featured celebrities instead of models on the covers of the magazine. A lot of what we see in fashion magazines today can be directly traced to Anna Wintour. In 2013, Wintour was promoted to Condé Nast’s Artistic Director, and in 2020, she was further promoted to Global Chief Content Officer, meaning her influence extended over all the company’s brands.
But Anna Wintour is also as well known for the Met Gala, which is fashion’s most prestigious event, and the fact that a former personal assistant, Lauren Weisberger, wrote a bestselling novel featuring a fashion editor, widely believed to be based on Wintour. And Wintour makes no money from either of those things. The Met Gala is, after all, a charity event, and Weisberg’s book is, well… a fictional depiction of someone some might say is Wintour. Let’s just leave it at that.
