After more than 30 years of writing, directing and acting under his birth name, Rob McElhenney is making things easier for his fans.
The Emmy winner has filed to legally change his name to Rob Mac, according to multiple reports, following several self-referential jokes over the years about the complicated pronunciation of his original surname.
On Welcome to Wrexham, the pronunciation proved to be a challenge when his More Better Productions invested in South American soccer teams following the success of his and Ryan Reynold‘s Wrexham AFC, depicted on the FX reality series.
In 2023, Reynolds penned a song for McElhenney’s birthday about how to pronounce the name, featuring the Wrexham Celtic Chorus and his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day and wife Kaitlin Olson.

“Pronouncing all those Ns and Es and Hs can perplex ’em. So here’s a little birthday gift from all your mates in Wrexham,” sang Reynolds in the song.
“You’ll probably f it up, but give it a try,” notes Olson before the chorus instructs, “Mack instead of Mick, then Henney does the trick. So get the name correct and show the man some damn respect!”
It’s Always Sunny fans can expect to see the co-creator and star’s new credit when Season 17 premieres July 9 on FXX with ‘The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary’, the second half of the show’s two-part crossover event with ABC’s Abbott Elementary.
I was always more of a Chef Boyardee Chili Mac fan, myself.
Great move.
Think of the time we’ll save by not having to pronounce his full name, time that can be devoted to other things like curing cancer. The possibilities for mankind are endless.
You really should read the article before commenting. It’s only 9 sentences…I’m sure you can manage that task.
