Penguins Make Three 5th Round Picks; Center, Defense & Wing with Jam

The draft de Pittsburgh Penguins continued Saturday afternoon as general manager Kyle Dubas made another trade to add more picks, swapping the 85th overall pick of the third round in exchange for Nos. 91 and No. 154.
The move gave the Penguins three fifth-round selections, and like he did in the fourth round, Dubas went back to the Soo Greyhounds for a little hometown flavor. The fifth-rounders were merely the middle of the Penguins’ 13 picks in this draft.

Pick 130: Ryan Miller, Center, Portland Winterhawks
The Penguins’ run of heavy or big centers ended with Miller, who is 5-foot-11, 174 pounds. The Portland product played for former Penguins coach Mike Johnston, who is the GM, and the organization usually turns out smart, responsible players.
Miller fits the bill. The Winterhawks profile describes him as a responsible 200-foot player with consistency and a never-quit approach on the defensive side of the rink.
Miller was one of the few picks in the Penguins draft whom they selected higher than the public rankings. He was ranked 66th by DobberProspects, 96th by Daily Faceoff, and 112th by Elite Prospects.
Pick 148: Quinn Beauchesne, Defense, Guelph Storm
The Penguins took their third right-shot defenseman of the draft. Beauchesne is an all-around defenseman with elite skating. Like the Penguins’ third-round pick, Charlie Trethewey, Beauchesne gets around the ice quickly in all directions, but his numbers were only OK.
In 49 games, Beauchesne had six goals and 18 assists. He has an easily projectable size and could fill out more, at 6-foot, 183 pounds.
The knocks on the righty are his puck management. He tends to make bad decisions under pressure and needs to add strength to win more puck battles.
Pick 154: Jordan Charron, RW, Soo Greyhounds
Good skating, but mediocre scoring. Charron is physical and likes to throw the body, and the Penguins organization spent the day adding players not afraid to rattle the boards. Charron is a bottom-lines type forward who had 21 points, including 10 goals in 48 games for the Soo this season. Elite Prospects reports the 6-foot-1, 190-pound winger will attend St. Lawrence University next season.
Thanks Dan. Good info on the picks. Like anything else, time will tell if they work out.
