Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

The Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ is a brand new card—and it’s already turning heads. The card comes with an incredible number of benefits and credits that seamlessly blend travel incentives with what you need for your small business. On the travel side, you can easily take advantage of an annual $300 flexible travel credit, up to $500 in credits toward luxury hotel bookings made through Chase Travel’s The Edit℠ collection and a trusted traveler application credit up to every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck® or NEXUS.

The card doesn’t ignore business needs, though. You can also earn credits for qualifying purchases made with ZipRecruiter, Google Workspace, DoorDash, Lyft and Giftcards.com, all of which will help keep things running smoothly and potentially save you more than $1,000 per year. And although there’s a sizable annual fee, you can add employee cards for free.

What We Don’t Like

This card isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it option. You’ll need to stay hands-on to keep track of all the benefit offerings and ensure you’ve made the right transactions at the right time to qualify. The card also earns a mere 1 point per dollar spent on most purchases, which is frustratingly low for a card of this caliber.

Who It’s Best For

Small businesses with travel plans are the best fit for this card, given its focus on travel perks and rewards centered on flight and hotel needs.

Pros & Cons
  • 8X points on Chase Travel purchases and 4X on direct flights and hotels
  • Lounge access for the cardholder plus two guests per visit.
  • Over $1,500 of potential value in statement credits
  • Valuable redemptions, including Points Boost offers
  • Superb travel protections
  • Free employee cards
  • $795 annual fee is extremely high
  • Some direct travel reservations earn just 1X
  • No upgrade option for employee cards to receive additional benefits

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card allows you to earn up to 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards® points and offers an impressive welcome bonus, making it a top pick for business travel. Some earning categories have caps for bonus points, but the limits are high enough that they won’t impact all businesses.

Once earned, Ultimate Rewards are valuable because they are so flexible. You can book travel through Chase Travel℠, including some Point Boost redemptions where curated reservations are available at up to 75% more value. You can also transfer to multiple loyalty programs, including United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards and World of Hyatt.

What We Don’t Like

The travel protections on this card are substantially less comprehensive than what you’d find on premium personal cards.

Who It’s Best For

This card will appeal to business owners interested in flexible travel rewards who don’t need robust trip protections.

In this age of digital media, many small business owners find themselves spending significant money on social media ads. That makes the Ink Business Preferred and its bonus earnings on advertising purchases with social media sites and search engines incredibly valuable. Plus, you’ll be able to transfer your rewards to any of Chase’s airline and hotel partners directly from the card without needing to combine them with any other personal Chase card.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

With a high annual fee, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) won’t be for everybody, but it’s a fantastic option for businesses that prioritize luxe travel benefits. The perks on this card are unbeatable. Cardholders get airport lounge access through the Amex Global Lounge Collection and elite status after enrollment with travel brands, including Hilton, Marriott, Avis, National and Hertz. Statement credits abound in each year of membership with the ability to earn credits after eligible spending on airline incidentals charged to your one selected qualifying airline, quarterly Hilton credits and a CLEAR® Plus membership. Cardholders also get credit for purchases with Indeed (enrollment required for select benefits).

One unique benefit of this card is a 35% rebate on points redemptions for select flights booked with Amex Travel®. For businesses that will use all (or many) of these offers, the Business Platinum can provide a ton of value.

What We Don’t Like

To take advantage of many of the card’s benefits, you’ll need to pay close attention to the fine print, deadlines and enrollment information.

Who It’s Best For

The Amex Business Platinum is ideal for business owners who expect to use the included travel perks often enough to justify its annual fee.

The 35% points rebate is the quiet hero of this card. It makes essentially any first- or business-class redemption guaranteed to be worth 1.5 cents per point (along with all tickets on the airline of your choice). In an era where award availability can be hard to find, that’s a feature you’ll likely find yourself utilizing on a regular basis.

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

Small businesses can earn big rewards with the American Express® Business Gold Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees), thanks in part to unrivaled earnings rates in select spending categories. It’s easy to watch your rewards balance grow on this card, and a strong welcome bonus can propel you forward even faster. Membership Rewards® points are fantastic for travel, though other redemption opportunities are also available. The card also offers statement credits toward eligible U.S. purchases from FedEx, GrubHub, office supply stores or a monthly Walmart+ subscription (enrollment required).

What We Don’t Like

It’s hard to hide the $375 annual fee, which might be more than some businesses are willing to spend. Cardholders are also subject to a combined spending cap of $150,000 per calendar year on their top two earning categories before earning rates drop, which could be a limiting factor.

Who It’s Best For

Businesses that can max out the rewards potential on this card and use the statement credits will find this a fruitful addition to their wallets.

Why We Like It

High cash-back rates, a welcome bonus, no annual fee and an introductory APR make the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa® Business Card a unicorn. With free employee cards and a $100 annual software subscription credit, it could be worth holding onto well after the intro APR period expires.

What We Don’t Like

There’s a foreign transaction fee, so this card won’t be a good option for businesses whose employees regularly make purchases while traveling abroad.

Who It’s Best For

This card is best suited for business owners who want to pay down a large purchase over time while earning cash back.

Pros & Cons
  • No annual fee
  • Earn 3% cash back on eligible purchases at gas stations, EV charging stations (on transactions of $200 or less excluding discount stores, supercenters and wholesale clubs), office supply stores, cellphone service providers and restaurants.
  • Low introductory APR on purchases
  • Reward categories may not align with how your business spends
  • Ongoing rewards outside of the bonus categories earn only 1%

Why We Like It

For small businesses and startups that want a little bit of everything, the Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card comes ready to provide. You get cash-back rewards, a welcome offer, an intro APR and no annual fee.

Sometimes cards that try to do too much end up failing at everything, but the Ink Unlimited doesn’t fall into that trap. The earnings rate is respectable for a card without an annual fee, and the welcome offer is extraordinary. Plus, you won’t be disappointed by a full year of an introductory APR.

What We Don’t Like

If you don’t need an intro APR offer, you’ll find other cards with better earning rates and other potential perks that reward your loyalty.

Who It’s Best For

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card will be appreciated by small businesses with decision fatigue that want a card that offers a little bit of everything.

If you want to convert your rewards from cash back to travel points, you can combine the rewards earned from this card with one of Chase’s other premium credit cards and get access to Chase’s valuable transfer partners.

Why We Like It

The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (Terms apply, see rates & fees) earns 2 points per dollar on the first $50,000 of spending annually (then 1 point per dollar). That’s a sweet deal, especially since Membership Rewards® points are ultraflexible. The card also has an introductory APR offer, giving businesses two simultaneous ways to leverage the card for value.

What We Don’t Like

The introductory APR period only lasts for 12 months.

Who It’s Best For

This card offers solid value to new businesses and independent contractors who prefer flexible rewards and don’t expect to exceed the $50,000 spending cap for bonus rewards.

Pros & Cons
  • Wide variety of airline transfer partners
  • No annual fee
  • High rewards rate on the first $50,000 in annual spending
  • There is a foreign transaction fee
  • 2 points per dollar rewards rate falls to 1 point per dollar after $50,000 in annual spending
Card Details

Our Expert Take

Why We Like It

Offering mostly classic airline benefits, The New United℠ Business Card fills a need for travelers looking to enhance their United experience. Cardholders receive a free first checked bag and priority boarding when flying United, two United Club day passes annually and a 25% discount on purchases made in-flight. Plus, cardholders can earn 1 Premier qualifying point for every $20 spent (up to 4,000 PQP per calendar year), helping you achieve status faster.

The card also offers several potential credits and perks when making qualifying transactions. For example, you’ll earn $125 in United credit after making five United flight purchases of $100 or more in a calendar year. And you can earn two free Economy Plus seat upgrades for travel within the continental U.S. after spending $25,000 on your card in a year. Additional credits are available for eligible transactions with hotels, rental car companies and other card partners.

What We Don’t Like

Purchases on United Airlines earn a measly 2 miles per dollar, which isn’t very inspiring for a co-branded card. Thankfully, a few other purchase categories also earn 2 miles per dollar spent.

Who It’s Best For

With a reasonable annual fee that can be quickly justified by using its benefits when flying United, this card is an obvious choice for anyone who flies the airline.

Why We Like It

The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card offers one of the best paths to earning Hyatt points and a fast track to elite status. You get up to $100 in Hyatt statement credits (redeemable as $50 statement credits twice a year) on Hyatt purchases and an incentive for spending $50,000 annually on the card: you’ll get 10% of redeemed points back for the remainder of the calendar year on up to 200,000 points redeemed. Plus, you can gift Discoverist status to up to five employees, which can be an attractive incentive.

What We Don’t Like

The annual fee is high compared to other midtier annual fee hotel credit cards. Another downside of Hyatt is its lack of reach in smaller U.S. markets and large sections of the globe, which could make it difficult to find a hotel where you’re traveling.

Who It’s Best For

This card is best for business owners who prefer a top-notch hotel experience and travel where Hyatt offers hotel locations.

Pros & Cons
  • Welcome bonus
  • Solid earnings rates
  • Automatic Discoverist status
  • Annual fee
  • Low earning rate for non-bonused spending
  • Base level status with the card offers limited benefits
Card Details
  • 60,000 Bonus Points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening.
  • Up to 9 points total per $1 spent at Hyatt – 4 Bonus Points per $1 on qualified purchases at Hyatt hotels & up to 5 Base Points per $1 from Hyatt as a World of Hyatt member
  • 2 Bonus Points per $1 spent in your top three spend categories each quarter.
  • 2 Bonus Points per $1 spent on fitness club and gym memberships
  • 1 Bonus Point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
  • Up to $100 in Hyatt statement credits – spend $50 or more at any Hyatt property and earn $50 statement credits up to two times each anniversary year.
  • 5 Tier-Qualifying night credits toward status and Milestone rewards for every $10,000 you spend in a calendar year.

Methodology for the Best Business Credit Cards

To create a list of the top 10 small business cards, Forbes Advisor analyzed over 60 business credit cards. For each card, we gathered information that potential cardholders would use in their decision-making process, including:

  • Annual fees
  • Reward earning rates and values
  • Welcome bonuses
  • Interest rates and/or promotions
  • Card benefits, credits and perks
  • Consumer protections

Once this information was gathered, we evaluated each card’s characteristics against other, similar cards, meaning we compared hotel cards to hotel cards, cash-back cards to cash-back cards, and the like. We then ranked cards within these subcategories based on potential value and features and chose the best of each card type to feature on this list.

Forbes Advisor re-evaluates each credit card list at least every 12 months to determine if any cards need to be added and/or removed. However, a list could be updated sooner if significant changes are made to the mentioned cards or if a new credit card is announced that’s likely to impact the category.

How To Get a Business Credit Card

To get a business credit card, start by checking your credit score and getting prequalified to gauge your approval odds. Then compare card options, choose the one that fits your needs and complete an application with your business details. If approved, you’ll typically receive the card by mail within seven to 10 days.

Learn more about how to get a business credit card, including tips on how to improve your odds of approval and a few potential issues to watch out for.

How To Build Business Credit

Building business credit works in the same way as building personal credit—by using it and paying off the bill on time and in full each month. However, businesses can also do a few other things to help establish credit.

  1. Register your business and obtain an employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS.
  2. Obtain a D-U-N-S Number, which can be obtained from Dun & Bradstreet, a business credit reporting agency.
  3. Open a business credit card.
  4. Use the credit card responsibly by paying your bills on time and not overextending yourself.

How To Make the Most of Your Business Credit Card

Imagine all the rewards and benefits you could be missing. To ensure your business card is working as hard as you, here’s how to unlock additional potential:

  • Leverage card benefits to assist with your company’s needs
  • Select a card with rewards that align with business spending
  • Ensure that you only spend what you can afford to pay off in full to avoid interest
  • Deduct any interest or card fees as business expenses

Business credit cards often offer generous welcome bonuses, and planning the opening of new business credit cards to align with the major business purchases you make each year can yield hundreds or even thousands of dollars in rewards. These bonuses typically require that you spend a certain amount of money in a specific time period after opening the card. One way to meet the spending requirement is to pay your taxes with a credit card. Note that you will pay a processing fee between 1.75% to 1.85%.

Alternatives to Business Credit Cards

It can be tempting to simply use a card you already have for business expenses, but there are worthwhile reasons to specifically consider a business card over a personal card. Alternatively, you may wish to use a different form of financing, such as:

Are Business Credit Cards Worth It?

Business credit cards allow small business owners, start-ups and corporate managers alike to track finances separately and gain access to revolving capital. Regardless of how small or established your business is, it can also help you:

  • Manage your expenses. Many business cards offer reporting tools, easy exports to accounting software and the ability to set limits on employee cards.
  • Build a business credit history. Your payment history and other activity are reported and can help improve your business credit score to better qualify for future financing.
  • Unlock exclusive rewards. Card benefits and reward programs can lead to significant value for your business.
Pro Tip
It’s important to understand how a business credit card can affect your personal credit. Most business cards require a personal guarantee to cover debt with personal assets if your business can’t pay. Additionally, delinquencies and other negative card behavior might be added to your personal credit reports.

FAQs for Business Credit Cards

What is the best small business credit card?

Choosing the best business card for your particular circumstances will depend on a combination of your business spending patterns, your goals in owning a particular business card (such as whether you want rewards or a 0% introductory APR offer) and your personal credit history. No one best card can satisfy everyone’s needs.

How do business credit cards work?

Business credit cards operate like personal credit cards, but they can help build your business credit because they typically report to commercial credit bureaus.

What is the easiest business credit card to get?

A secured business credit card will likely be among the easiest cards to receive approval for since lines of credit with secured cards are collateralized. Though these cards do require business owners and operators to secure the line of credit with a deposit, they can offer pathways for businesses to build credit.

How many business credit cards should I have?

Each business may have a different ideal number of business credit cards. Carrying multiple business cards may allow you to earn more varied and higher rewards and provide a more comprehensive set of business benefits, but managing multiple accounts requires more time and oversight.

What business credit card gives the highest limit?

Business credit card issuers don’t publicly disclose their credit limits. However, if you have a well-established business with high expenses, you may consider a card with no preset spending limit.

Potential options include The Business Platinum Card® from American Express* and the Capital One Spark Cash Plus.
