Expert Take

NordVPN is the best VPN I have tested. It topped our roundup of the best VPNs due to its features, outstanding connection speeds and premium tools such as dark web monitoring. All the tools you need to stay safe online are here, including a kill switch, double-hop, which lets you route data through two servers, and dedicated IP addresses. This is topped by NordVPN’s zero-logs policy and publicly available audits. NordVPN is located in Panama, meaning it is outside the scope of Five, Nine and 14 Eyes surveillance alliances.

NordVPN’s Android Interface is not easy on the eyes.

One feature that makes NordVPN truly stand out is Meshnet, which lets users create secure, private local networks. SMBs and individuals can connect all of their devices to Meshnet and can enjoy remote access, file sharing and even LAN parties, which will please gamers. NordVPN costs $12.99 monthly. However, if you sign up for a one-year plan, you’ll pay between $4.99 and $8.99 per month (billed annually). A two-year agreement drops the price range to between $3.39 and $7.39 per month (billed every two years).

NordVPN’s users customers like the platform’s security, speeds, reliability and how easy it is to unlock geoblocked content. However, a fair number of users dislike NordVPN’s billing practices and substandard customer service. There are also some complaints about how plans jump in price after the initial agreement ends. Pay attention to the small print, you’ll be just fine.

  • Zero-logs, externally audited
  • More than enough features to keep you anonymous online

  • The mobile interface needs a face-lift

Testing Insights

A screenshot of NordVPN settings on Android.
While NordVPN’s interface isn’t pretty, it is easy to navigate.

NordVPN’s interfaces, especially on mobile, are outdated, but they’re usable. In fact, NordVPN tops our roundup of the best Android VPNs. Choosing tools and switching servers is simple. Regarding speeds, NordVPN is a consistent performer. Without a VPN, my base speed was 387.48 Mbps. When connecting to a local NordVPN server, speeds were, on average, 324.87 Mbps. Speeds on distant servers were good enough for streaming and gaming. I used Wireshark to test encryption and ipleak.net for DNS leaks. NordVPN passed both tests easily.

Expert Take

PureVPN’s dedicated streaming servers, shortcuts to popular streaming services, and a server count that tops 6,000 make it the ideal choice for those who like to stream global content. Whether you like watching British comedies using the BBC iPlayer, Spanish content on Netflix, or Disney+ movies that aren’t available in the U.S., you can do so without breaking a sweat. You’re also secure due to PureVPN’s no log policy, strong VPN protocols and AES-256-bit encryption methods.

PureVPN has links to popular streaming services in its applications.

The usual list of safety features, including a kill switch, split tunneling and obfuscated servers, which hide the fact that you’re using a VPN, are also offered. Those wanting to protect their identities will also appreciate the dark web monitor, an ad tracker blocker and password manager. Regarding pricing, you won’t break the bank if you opt for longer plans. Monthly plans (Standard, Plus, and Max) range from $12.95 to $19.95. Yearly and multiyear plans can save you over 80%, depending on the yearly, two-year or five-year plan you choose.

A screenshot showing PureVPN is not leaking DNS data on ipleak.net.
PureVPN passed ipleak.net tests with flying colors.

PureVPN’s airy interface is a joy to use. I had no problems finding my way around, choosing servers and switching VPN protocols. I appreciate that you can access popular streaming services from shortcuts in the app. I tested PureVPN with Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer and had no problem streaming content. PureVPN’s USA server speeds were also decent, hitting 144.61 Mbps with a ping time of 25ms, making it ideal for online gaming. PureVPN passed data encryption tests on Wireshark and did not leak DNS data when tested with ipleak.net.

If you have many devices that need to be connected to a VPN simultaneously, Surfshark could be the VPN for you, as it allows unlimited simultaneous connections. Surfshark has clients for all major computer operating systems, mobile devices, smart TVs and browsers. It boasts over 3,200 servers in over 100 countries and offers dedicated IPs and robust protocols (IKEv2, WireGuard, OpenVPN). Surfshark also has obfuscated servers, Double VPN (multihop) and a kill switch to keep you safe online.

A screenshot of Surfshark’s multi-hop tool.
Surfshark’s interface is well-designed, making it easy to navigate.

Like other VPNs, Surfshark has tools for ad, cookie and pop-up blocking. The biggest downside is that Surfshark is located in the Netherlands, which is a member of the Nine Eyes surveillance community. However, the provider has a no-logs policy and uses RAM-only servers, meaning identifying information is never stored, and thus, cannot be shared. Regarding pricing, Surfshark is costly on a month-to-month basis at $15.45 for Surfshark Starter. However, it becomes a cheap VPN when moving into multiyear plans, as you can save up to 86%.

Surfshark customers like its affordable plans, top customer service and overall functionality. However, some customers claim Surfshark lies about unlimited devices. I have not experienced issues regarding this. There are also some complaints about overall refund and service policies. Regarding speeds, it’s a mixed bag with some users being very happy and others stating connections are often too slow.

A screenshot of Surfshark’s desktop interface.
Surfshark’s interface will not intimidate users.

Surfshark is one of the easiest VPNs to use, due to its clean interface that features logical menus with clear text and icons. Connecting and disconnecting on desktop and mobile devices is simple, as is choosing new servers and multihop. I have used Surfshark to stream content without issue and have used it to game online. Speeds are always more than fast enough across all servers, but you need to watch for higher latencies when connecting to distant servers. Surfshark passed my Wireshark and ipleak.net tests, which I love to see.

Expert Take

If money is tight and you need more than a cheap VPN, Hide.me offers a free plan with unlimited data with the WireGuard protocol, a kill switch and access to eight servers. You can connect only one device, but you can download the client to your device without entering an email address. The free plan is covered by Hide.me’s zero-logs policy, and the company is located in Malaysia, meaning it’s not subject to Five, Nine and 14 Eyes surveillance programs.

A screenshot of Hide.me’s settings page on desktop.
Features and options are clearly labeled in Hide.me’s desktop application.

The paid plans can access more than 2,600 servers, take advantage of multihopping, port-forwarding and split tunneling, which allows you to choose which data gets sent through the VPN. Hide.me‘s pricing is competitive. The monthly plan costs $9.95. Multiyear plans drop to $4.57 per month (billed annually) for a one-year agreement and $2.69 per month (billed every two years) for a two-year commitment. While Hide.me is available for many platforms, it will be great for those using Windows. You can learn more in our roundup of the best Windows VPNs.

Overall, Hide.me’s customers appreciate the fast connection speeds, reliability and the security levels. They like the no-fuss software, the levels of customer service and the features included in the free plan. However, some customers have reported connectivity issues, which is something I experienced during testing, and some performance issues when torrenting. However, Hide.me’s overall reputation is excellent.

Pros & Cons
  • Unlimited data, even on the free plan
  • Very affordable paid plans
  • Located outside of surveillance alliances
  • Connection and reliability issues
  • Only 10 simultaneous connections
  • Middling connection speeds

Testing Insights

A screenshot showing Hide.me dropping connection while testing data encryption with Wireshark.
I encountered several VPN drops while testing Hide.me, but the kill switch always worked.

Hide.me is a fine VPN for anyone wanting to browse the web anonymously. While connection speeds are not a strong point, you will find that no matter what server you connect to, speeds are more than sufficient for browsing, streaming and gaming. I was concerned by how many times my connection dropped during testing. During one session, my connection dropped three times, which was frustrating. However, the kill switch worked each time. Hide.me also passed ipleak.net and Wireshark tests.

Expert Take

Private Internet Access is my favorite VPN for online gaming because it has servers in all 50 U.S. states, meaning speeds are fast and latencies are low. PIA, which made our roundup of the best VPNs for gaming, can be installed on routers, meaning all your gaming devices, from Xbox to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch to your PC, will be protected. This can help prevent targeted DDoS attacks, which send tons of data to break your connection, or a swatting attempt, which is when an online foe tracks your physical address and then calls the police to your location.

A screenshot of PIA’s desktop interface.
PIA’s interface is data-filled and quite confusing at times.

You’ll find all the usual VPN features in PIA, such as a kill switch, split tunneling, obfuscated servers, support for unlimited device connections, and robust VPN protocols. PIA costs $11.95 if you pay monthly. However, you can save with multiyear plans. The one-year plan drops to $49.99 (billed annually) and the three-year plan costs $79.99 (billed every three years). The downer about PIA is that its jurisdiction is the U.S., meaning it is a member of the Five Eyes Alliance.

Customers are happy with the performance, ease of use and PIA’s competitive paid plans. PIA customers also praise the company’s no-logs policy. However, there are some complaints about connectivity issues, poor customer service and streaming issues. I have not experienced issues with connectivity or streaming, but I agree with the sentiment regarding customer service. Still, the majority of PIA customers are happy.

Pros & Cons
  • Excellent speeds and low latencies
  • Multiyear plans won’t break the bank
  • Zero-logs policy and public audits
  • Located in the U.S. (a Five Eyes Nation)

A screenshot of PIA’s desktop client settings screen.
PIA’s settings page is easy to navigate, but the main interface is confusing.

I’m not a fan of PIA’s desktop user interface. It is cluttered with information, which makes it confusing. However, diving into menus and using PIA on mobile devices is fine. I have used PIA to game with and had no problems and streaming from popular services is straightforward. Connection speeds are also excellent, especially when using local servers. Speeds drop when using distant servers but not enough to cause significant problems. My Wireshark tests show all data packets were encrypted and ipleak.net showed no DNS leaks.

Expert Take

Proton VPN is the provider I use to keep my home secure. It offers a huge arsenal of tools and is based in Switzerland, which has some of the world’s strongest privacy laws. It’s also outside of all surveillance programs. Couple this with a no-logs policy and published external audits, and you have a VPN that will help you sleep at night. If you choose Proton Unlimited, which costs $12.99 (billed monthly), you also get a dark web monitor and a password manager.

Proton VPN’s map view makes it easy to select servers globally.

Proton VPN features a kill switch, multihop (Secure Core), and support for Tor over VPN. AES-256-bit and ChaCha20 encryption and support for WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 are here. Proton VPN is one of the best VPNs for streaming, with over 13,000 servers in 91 countries. Proton’s free plan offers unlimited data and five servers. VPN-only plans cost $9.99 per month (billed monthly) to $4.49 for two years (billed every two years). Proton Unlimited costs between $12.99 monthly to $7.99 per month for two years (billed every two years).

ProtonVPN users love the free plan, which offers unlimited data and strong security. However, there seems to be a number of users that experience slow speeds, technical difficulties and streaming challenges. In the years I have used Proton VPN, I have not experienced the same. Overall, the platform is liked, but users wish the platform were slightly more affordable.

Pros & Cons
  • Great free plan
  • Robust security tools and privacy policies
  • Paid plans for all income levels
  • Free plan only supports one device
  • Only five unelectable servers on the free plan
  • Dedicated IPs for business users only

A screenshot showing download and upload speeds for Proton VPN on speedtest.net
Proton VPN’s connection speeds are as impressive as NordVPN’s.

I have used Proton VPN for years and have no complaints. The software (desktop and mobile) is easy to use and the map view simplifies server selection. Regarding speeds, Proton VPN is fast, especially with local servers. Even when connecting to distant servers, speeds rarely drop below 100 Mbps, which is ideal for streaming, torrenting and gaming. Proton VPN did not leak any DNS or WebRTC data when testing with ipleak.net, and my Wireshark tests showed that all data packets were encrypted.

If you want to remain completely off the books, Mullvad VPN is your best choice. Mullvad has a no-logs policy, which will protect you even though the provider is located in Sweden, a member of the 14 Eyes surveillance program. However, Mullvad accepts payment for its services with cash. You can sign up with no email address and send your account number with cash in an envelope and your account will be credited. Mullvad VPN also accepts cryptocurrencies for payment and offers a 10% discount for cryptocurrency payments due to lower fees.

A screenshot of Mullvad’s desktop interface.
Mullvad is located in Sweden but has a no-logs policy.

Overall, Mullvad VPN does not offer many features. Its goal is to focus on security and privacy, which is refreshing. There’s a kill switch, support for multihopping, and quantum-resistant VPN tunnels, meaning even if quantum computers crack AES-256-bit encryption, which they currently can’t, they will have an even harder time cracking the quantum tunnels. Mullvad also offers split tunneling. I appreciate Mullvad VPN’s simple pricing. Since 2009, Mullvad’s monthly price of 5 euros per month has not changed. With current exchange rates, this equates to roughly $5.71 per month, making Mullvad one of the cheapest VPNs.

Mullvad’s focus on security and privacy, pricing and acceptance of cryptocurrency and cash as payment are lauded by the majority of its users. However, some customers report issues when streaming content and dislike the removal of port forwarding. Overall, Mullvad VPN receives high praise.

The Mullvad interface is on the small side, but it is quite easy to navigate.

Mullvad VPN doesn’t offer pretty software, but it works. Navigation is easy enough, and so is choosing and connecting to a server, or even multiple servers if you use multihop. There are no complicated settings to trip you up. Unfortunately, Mullvad’s server network is small at under 700 servers, but speeds were still respectable. The VPN did not leak DNS or WebRTC data and every data packet remained encrypted when testing with Wireshark.

Windscribe’s customers love the VPN’s performance, its ease of use and the loaded free plan. Windscribe’s speed and ability to bypass region-locked content are also praised. However, some dislike the free plan’s data limitations, and a few customers have complained about slow customer service response times and connectivity troubles. Testing Insights

A screenshot showing data encryption results for Windscribe in Wireshark.
Windscribe showed that its data encryption methods can be trusted.

Users will find that Windscribe is user-friendly and offers all the protection modern web users require. Windscribe passed DNS leak tests on ipleak.net and data encryption tests with WireShark. My biggest issue is the inconsistent speeds. Connecting to the same server several times saw results range from over 200.53 Mbps down to just 72.72 Mbps. While the speeds were enough for streaming and gaming, it would be nice to see more consistent performance.

Expert Take

Apart from being very affordable, with monthly plans starting at $9.99 and one- and three-year plans costing $49.99 and $120, TunnelBear offers a limited free plan and is the most user-friendly VPN on this list. The cutesy interface makes using TunnelBear a joy. Colorful maps show where servers are located and the clean menus clearly show user tools and features. It’s the ideal platform for anyone who has never used a VPN.

TunnelBear has the best VPN user interface.

TunnelBear, despite being a cheap VPN, offers everything needed to be safe online. You’ll find obfuscated servers (GhostBear), split tunneling (SplitBear), a kill switch (VigilantBear), and multiple protocols, including WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2. There are apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android and browser extensions. TunnelBear also has a no-logs policy and publicly available audits. If VPNs confuse you, I suggest taking TunnelBear for a spin as it helps simplify online security and privacy.

TunnelBear’s interface and ease of use are highly praised in real-world reviews. However, some customers state that TunnelBear’s speeds are slower than competing platforms and that it offers far fewer advanced features than most, which has made many users look to other VPNs. TunnelBear being owned by McAfee is also a point of contention. Overall, most users are satisfied with the service.

Testing Insights

A screenshot showing upload and download speeds for TunnelBear on speedtest.net.
During my tests, TunnelBear proved to be a fast VPN.

Honestly, I don’t think I have used a friendlier VPN than TunnelBear. The whimsical interface is a feast for the eyes. The colorful maps make server selection painless, and the menus offer clear choices, making it easy to understand what you’re doing. Speedwise, I have been very impressed with TunnelBear. Multiple tests on local servers returned speeds of well over 300 Mbps, which is ideal for peer-to-peer networking, streaming and gaming. Wireshark (data encryption) and ipleak.net (DNS leak tests) were also passed without problem.

Expert Take

If you travel to countries such as China, Türkiye, Russia, India and countries in the Middle East that don’t take too kindly to the use of VPNs, VyprVPN could quickly become your best friend. While VPN usage in these countries is never a certainty, VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol flies just far enough under the radar to sometimes avoid detection. VyprVPN’s pricing makes it accessible, too. The monthly plan costs $10, while the one-year plan costs $60 (billed annually), and the two-year plan costs $72 (billed every two years).

A screenshot of the VyprVPN interface.
VyprVPN’s interface is simple and uncluttered.

Given the affordable pricing, it’s nice to see that VyprVPN does not cheap out where it matters most: privacy and security. VyprVPN is a no-logs VPN, offers split tunneling, WireGuard, and OpenVPN protocols and a kill switch. You’ll also find that you can connect five devices simultaneously, use dedicated device applications (Windows, macOS, Android and iOS), and read external audits. I also have to brag on VyprVPN’s customer service. All of my questions and concerns were answered quickly by knowledgeable staff through live chat and email.

Real-world users of VyperVPN appreciate the platform’s strong encryption methods, overall ease of use, strong feature set and performance in certain regions. However, many have voiced concerns over VPN stability and pricing. I have not run into any problems regarding stability, but your mileage may vary. Overall, VyprVPN receives mixed reviews.

Testing Insights

A screenshot of VyprVPN connection speeds while using speedtest.net.
While not the fastest VPN, VyperVPN offers consistent connection speeds.

VyprVPN won’t win awards for being the fastest or the prettiest VPN. However, it would be up for a consistency award in my books. Whether I connected to U.S. or European servers, speeds were identical. The only difference that I noticed is that ping suffered on more distant servers. All DNS leaks and encryption tests were passed, and I had no difficulty using the software. My only complaint is that the kill switch is off by default. Don’t forget to activate it before getting online.

Methodology

Software testing is a serious business. To give providers a fair trial, I used our proprietary rubric to help rank multiple features and test the top platforms. We chose 15 platforms for the best cheap VPN software and 48 features across eight categories were analyzed. I then tested the top 10 platforms. Each VPN was then awarded a final score.

What Are Five, Nine and 14 Eyes Surveillance Alliances?

Five Eyes, Nine Eyes and 14 Eyes are government intelligence sharing communities. While it is generally illegal for countries to spy on their citizens, it’s not always the case for governments of other countries. For example, the U.S. can ask France to watch U.S. citizens while they use a VPN, and France will happily share the data.

Picking a VPN located in the jurisdiction of one of the 14 countries (the U.S., UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Spain and Italy) is fine as long as your VPN has a no-logs or zero-logs policy.

I only recommend using VPNs with no-logs and zero-logs policies simply because if a VPN doesn’t collect user data, it has nothing to share when subpoenaed by government agencies. In the provider sections, I have clearly listed where each provider is located so that you can make more informed VPN decisions.

How to Choose the Best Cheap VPN

Before choosing a VPN, whether for business or personal use, you must do your due diligence and ensure that a provider offers certain VPN features at a minimum to protect your online safety.

John Yensen, president at Revotech Networks, says, “If you are working in tech, I would say that a VPN is a must-have whether you’re checking personal email at a café or connecting to corporate resources from home. I use one every day when I need to encrypt my traffic on public Wi-Fi and keep my browsing private. When choosing a VPN, I try to look for AES-256 encryption, a strict zero-logs policy, and an independent security audit. These factors give me more confidence that I won’t run into any issues.”

In the coming sections, I’ll cover the core features that should be required in cheap VPNs, pricing and value information, and discuss why ease of use is important.

Essential Cheap VPN Software Features

When shopping for a cheap VPN, I highly recommend double-checking a provider’s features so that you can ensure the following are included.

  • Server locations. The more server locations are offered, the more likely you are to get higher speeds, better ping times and bypass region-locked content.
  • Kill Switch. A kill switch is a feature that you should never make compromises on. Without one, if your VPN loses connection, everyone can see what you’re doing online.
  • Split tunneling. With split tunneling, you can choose what data to send through the encrypted VPN tunnel. You can learn more by reading our guide on split tunneling.
  • Multiple VPN Protocols. While WireGuard and OpenVPN are the standard protocols you should use, it never hurts for providers to offer more options. IPsec, IKEv2, and even custom protocols can help keep you anonymous while online.
  • Industry standard encryption. Stick with industry recognized encryption protocols, such as AES-256-bit and ChaCha20 with the WireGuard protocol and you’ll not need to worry about data encryption.
  • Applications. Look at provider websites to determine whether they offer desktop and mobile applications and even clients for smart TVs, routers, and browsers.
  • No-logs policy. A No-logs policy, which is also known as zero-logs, ensures that no identifiable data is stored on provider servers. Even if local law enforcement or government agencies subpoena VPN providers, those with no-logs policies won’t be able to hand over data, because they won’t have any.
  • Verifiable third-party audits. If a VPN refuses to be audited or refuses to publish third-party audits, stay away from it. Only use VPN providers that are proud to share findings from external audits.

Value

While this roundup is covering cheap VPNs, it’s always worth taking the time to research all of the plans that providers offer, just in case you need to change plans later. You’ll notice that many providers list plan prices on their websites, which is always ideal; however, you must pay close attention as important details are in the small print.

Many VPN providers significantly lower the cost of their services when you sign up for longer plans. While these up-front deals for new customers offer excellent value, the fine print usually states that at the end of your contract, the price increases sharply, sometimes by as much as three or four times.

Ease Of Use

Ease of use is often overlooked in favor of low prices or good deals. Don’t fall into that trap and don’t underestimate the importance of a user-friendly tool. When VPN providers allow you to try their services for free, there’s no need to make a VPN decision in the dark. I highly recommend that you take advantage of free trials or money-back guarantees so that you can get your hands on the software and ensure it fits your needs.

Which Cheap VPN Is Best For You or Your Business?

If, after reading this guide, you’re still not sure what VPN to use, take a look at the scenarios below.

  • If you need a free VPN, I recommend looking at Proton VPN and Windscribe, as they offer many features and good data options
  • If you need to bypass VPN bans, VyprVPN is your best choice, thanks to its Chameleon protocol
  • If you want to stream content, NordVPN and PureVPN are the two I’d look into due to their extensive server networks
