Expert Take

Geared for more technically minded website owners, Kinsta offers truly free website hosting. However, Kinsta’s Edge network uses GitHub static sites, which requires raw code. This isn’t a drag-and-drop website builder such as Wix or Showit.

For managed WordPress or WooCommerce hosting, prices are a bit higher than others on our list, but then again, Kinsta’s customer service and tech support are widely praised, and you never get gatekept by an AI chatbot. Every time I’ve talked to one of the troubleshooting managers, listening to the speed of the custom coding she wrote while we were talking was mind-blowing.

Kinsta’s managed WordPress web hosting service is noted for its impressive speed, excellent customer support and easy interface. The product’s integration with Google Cloud enhances its performance and reliability, and many users praise the responsiveness of its 24/7 support team. Hostwinds takes the pressure off of managing your website at low rates. I am impressed by the depth of its managed services. Even the shared plans include Lightspeed servers, nightly backups, proactive network and infrastructure monitoring, and website monitoring with automatic ticket creation if a problem is found.

In addition, Hostwinds creates an easy-to-use app market by auto-installing Softaculous so small businesses can easily expand website functionality with hundreds of apps. For those looking for a website builder, Hostwinds includes Weebly’s builder in some plans.

Expert Take

GreenGeeks is affordable pricing designed for the environment. With a 300% green energy match and one tree planted per account, it’s designed to offset the power-hungry nature of web hosting.

While GreenGeeks is a smaller host (only around 55,000 customers), that works well for better customer support, as you aren’t competing for attention with millions of other customers, and the do-something-good mindset behind the service means a great set of features from security to Click Installer to free malware cleanup.

While monthly pricing isn’t the cheapest on our list, it’s quite reasonable and a good value for what you get, especially considering the scalability options later on with VPS hosting.

GreenGeeks users praise the company’s customer support, easy website integration, eco-friendly initiatives and competitive pricing for its many hosting plans. They appreciate the responsiveness of GreenGeeks’s technical support, the product’s reliability and its fast server speeds. However, some are dissatisfied with GreenGeeks’ cancellation process and billing practices, which sometimes add unexpected charges when renewing the service. The service’s quality and environmental mission resonate with many businesses, but some users note inconsistency in its customer service and high cost at the end of initial promotions.

Unless you’re an enterprise-level business already, chances are you don’t have a big internal IT department. Managed hosting steps in and handles a lot of the backend tasks of web hosting, so you don’t have to be a one-person Geek Squad.

Even if you are a wiz at website management, managed hosting is still a great time-saver and spares you from repetitive tasks such as updates.

TMDHosting focuses almost exclusively on managed hosting, so its packages have a lot of features at lower costs than some other managed alternatives. I especially like the choice of Plesk or cPanel and Windows or Linux. The free script, template and module installations are huge cost-savers as well.

One of the largest domain registrars out there, Namecheap also offers hosting plans. As with its domain pricing, Namecheap offers very low monthly starting prices for web hosting and deeply discounted annual introductory pricing offers.

Most small business owners will opt for a year contract because the introductory rates mean you can get the biggest WordPress plan for less than $50, and those higher plans have plenty of extras.

It’s also an excellent option if you are looking to migrate an existing site because of rising costs. If you have a cPanel account elsewhere, Namecheap guarantees completing the migration within 24 hours with less than 15 minutes of downtime, and it backs up that offer with a year of free hosting if it doesn’t meet that timeframe.

Even with a few exceptions, it’s one of the best white-glove migration guarantees I’ve seen.

Expert Take

DreamHost offers excellent budget values, even with a lot of add-on costs. Shared plans start with unlimited traffic, SSL certificates and a domain name discount. Then, if you need more technical help, the managed WordPress plans (branded DreamPress) include CDN, unmetered bandwidth, a first-year free domain and pre-installed SSL, although prices are a little higher, starting at $23.99 a month.

For beginners, I really like that DreamHost uses a custom dashboard that’s more user-friendly than cPanel. However, I am not fond of the extra costs for items such as site migrations (outside of introductory offers) and hack fixes ($199) if your website suffers a cyberattack.

However, lower-tier plans sometimes wind up with many extra add-on costs. For example, outside of new customer specials, site migrations can cost $99 or more, and if your site is hacked, that’s another $199 to get help fixing it.

I freely admit I hate migrating websites. No matter how many times I work on them, there’s always a small snag to iron out. Mochahost makes it easy by including migration services. Most plans also include great storage, automatic backups and free first-year domain registration.

My biggest issue is that with no free trial, you have to either pay for a year upfront or miss out on discounted pricing to buy a month to test the service. While there’s a 30-day guarantee, a discussion with customer service highlighted that refunds can be delayed.

Expert Take

There are a lot of hosts that meet WordPress.org minimum requirements, but only a few are recommended by WordPress and called “some of the best and brightest of the hosting world.” Free email, automated migrations, WordPress staging and an AI website builder are nice extra features.

Even if you aren’t specifically interested in WordPress, the recommendation highlights the standards of Hostinger’s hosting packages. The website builder works on WordPress and regular shared plans, making it a great option if you don’t have the budget to hire a web designer.

I also like that Hostinger includes hosting for at least 100 websites in each WordPress and shared plan, so there is plenty of leeway in creating extra e-commerce stores or landing pages. This is a great cost saver, especially for dropshippers with multiple online storefronts.

Expert Take

While many of the hosting options at IONOS are designed for enterprise companies, there’s a lot of beginner-friendly pricing on shared plans, too, which is great for scalability later as your company grows.

Even at the lower-than-average monthly costs, the bells and whistles you expect, including professional email, unmetered bandwidth, one-click installs, SSL certificates and automated backups, are all there as well.

One thing I really like is how IONOS sweetens the pot for higher-level plans and multi-year pricing for tight budgets. The best deals are their midrange plans, with the ability to lock in monthly pricing of $1 if you pay a year upfront. Even better, if you pay for three or four years upfront, you can get a year free on some plans.

GoDaddy seems to be the first name people think of for web hosting, thanks to years of big advertising campaigns. It’s the web host techies love to hate, but with over 20 million customers, a large chunk of the internet still winds up there. Low prices (particularly with long-term contracts), integrated domain registration and a fairly powerful AI website builder help businesses of all sizes get online in minutes.

Plans vary from bare-bones basics to reseller packages. By integrating its AI website builder into the managed WordPress plans, GoDaddy helps small businesses take that leap to creating a website without the confusion of unfamiliar controls and overwhelming “where do I start” concerns that often arise with cPanel.

Methodology

Data underpins all of our best lists. Putting aside our personal favorites, we do deep dives into the data to narrow down our choices before we even log in and start testing out how products really perform. We never rely on marketing materials as the last word.

We started with a list of 17 candidates and gathered information on 33 factors in five categories covering the most popular features, budget concerns and scalability. We weighted those scores based on how they affect small businesses and compared them to our real-world testing to develop an overall outlook.

How To Choose the Best Cheap Web Hosting

If you’re looking for cheap web hosting, chances are budget is a primary concern for your business. However, besides a low bill, you need your website to function and stay live. With so much variation between plans and hosts, it can be hard to choose.

I always suggest starting out by making a list of must-haves and would-like-to-have features. For example, monthly billing might be a must-have because you don’t have the extra cash to pay a year or more upfront. Or, you might have a website builder on your must-have list because you can’t afford to pay a web designer right now.

Essential Cheap Web Hosting Features

When the budget is tight, you need a web host that includes the extras without charging an arm and a leg. Picking a host with basic features costing extra can easily eat into your bottom line.

Look for a host that includes the following features as part of your hosting plan:

  • Unlimited Bandwidth. Limits on how much data you can transfer to and from your website could lead to extra costs during traffic spikes.
  • Large Storage Limits. Storage for website files, customer data and media add up quickly.
  • SSL Certificates. Especially for e-commerce, encrypted communication is nonnegotiable.
  • Security Tools. Cybercrime continues to rise, so security features such as two-factor authentication, DDoS protections and zero-trust protocols are a must.
  • Automatic Backups. Automatic backups help reduce human error and your time investment while protecting your website in case of natural disasters, ransomware or power failures.
  • Support. Customer and tech support are your lifeline when things go wrong. You need a fast and reliable way to reach out when things break.

Overall, several hosts on our list serve as strong all-around generalists, such as TMDHosting, Hostinger and Namecheap.

Value

Budget matters, but so does getting a functional website. If your website is down frequently, loads slowly or managing your account is a nightmare, that ultra-low cost isn’t a bargain after all. Balancing cost, features and quality to find the biggest bang for your buck is necessary.

Each host on our list offers reasonable values, but you’ll often have to pay a year or more upfront to realize the biggest savings. When looking at overall value, DreamHost, Namecheap, and Hostinger stand out.

Portability

While many of the hosts on our list have relatively stable pricing, sometimes prices rise from market pressures or when hosts are sold. Being locked into a single host can result in unexpected extra costs. A portable website is one you can copy the files from and move them to a new host.

WordPress and other open-source CMS-built sites are usually considered the most portable, as are sites managed through cPanel. Website builder websites can be trickier. Most website builder plans don’t provide access to the files you’d need to migrate to another host.

Hosts with strong WordPress hosting where you can create portable websites include Hostinger, Namecheap and TMDHosting.

Website Creation

Most small businesses are watching every penny, and hiring outside web design help isn’t feasible for many. Finding a web host that includes an easy-to-use drag-and-drop website builder that works from templates makes it possible to create your own website without incurring extra costs.

While website builders aren’t always as portable as other website systems, they’re great for getting online fast. Hosts with website builders include IONOS, GoDaddy and Hostinger.

Technical Help

Even if you’re an experienced techie, sometimes you have to choose between spending time coding and managing your website or managing your business. Picking a web host with strong tech support might cost a little more upfront but save you more down the road than cheaper options.

Hosts that stand out for technical help include Kinsta and GreenGeeks.

Which Cheap Website Hosting Is Best for Your Business?

The best cheap web host depends on your needs and may change over time as your company grows. Starting out with a host that offers scalability later on with more powerful hosting plans, such as VPS and dedicated hosting, helps smooth out growing pains later.

That said, sometimes you start with what meets your needs now, and plan for changes in the future when a larger budget might allow for a website refresh if the original isn’t portable.

Let’s look at some common situations SMBs face.

If you’ve never managed a website before, choose a managed web host such as TMDHosting.
If money is extra tight, look for a host with low prices for monthly billing such as Namecheap.
If you’re growing fast and need a fully featured host that offers quick scalability, consider a host such as IONOS.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between shared hosting and WordPress hosting?

WordPress hosting is hosting that has been optimized to meet the needs of the WordPress CMS. Shared hosting is hosting where you share space with many other websites on the same server (computer). Cheap WordPress hosting can be shared or it can be VPS or dedicated.

Do I need a hosting plan for each website I make?

Whether you can host multiple sites on one plan depends on your web hosting plan. Some include multiple domains and websites, while others only allow extra subdomains. Shared hosting plans generally have more limits, while Cloud, VPS and Dedicated hosting generally offer more freedom.

Do landing pages count as a website?

Landing pages, one-page marketing websites used for marketing campaigns, are often stand-alone websites with their own custom domains. Information provided on Forbes Advisor is for educational purposes only. Your financial situation is unique and the products and services we review may not be right for your circumstances. We do not offer financial advice, advisory or brokerage services, nor do we recommend or advise individuals or to buy or sell particular stocks or securities. Performance information may have changed since the time of publication. Past performance is not indicative of future results.

Forbes Advisor adheres to strict editorial integrity standards. To the best of our knowledge, all content is accurate as of the date posted, though offers contained herein may no longer be available. The opinions expressed are the author’s alone and have not been provided, approved, or otherwise endorsed by our partners.
The Forbes Advisor editorial team is independent and objective. To help support our reporting work, and to continue our ability to provide this content for free to our readers, we receive compensation from the companies that advertise on the Forbes Advisor site. This compensation comes from two main sources. First, we provide paid placements to advertisers to present their offers. The compensation we receive for those placements affects how and where advertisers’ offers appear on the site. This site does not include all companies or products available within the market. Second, we also include links to advertisers’ offers in some of our articles; these “affiliate links” may generate income for our site when you click on them. The compensation we receive from advertisers does not influence the recommendations or advice our editorial team provides in our articles or otherwise impact any of the editorial content on Forbes Advisor. While we work hard to provide accurate and up to date information that we think you will find relevant, Forbes Advisor does not and cannot guarantee that any information provided is complete and makes no representations or warranties in connection thereto, nor to the accuracy or applicability thereof. Here is a list of our partners who offer products that we have affiliate links for.
