Along with many of Zoho’s software suites, such as Zoho Projects, I found Zoho Campaigns a cinch to use. The interface is clean, the menus are logical and all the tools are straightforward. I found it easy to create and manage contacts and design emails. You can also complete A/B tests to see email performance. You can integrate Campaigns with other Zoho platforms, such as Zoho CRM and Zoho Survey, and third-party options such as Shopify, Google and Google Analytics.

Drag-and-drop email builder

Expert Take

Designed with e-commerce in mind, Drip is a robust email marketing tool that will appeal to SMBs in the business-to-consumer (B2C) field. I appreciate Drip’s simplicity and how easy it is to navigate the platform and add contacts. Drip is simple, meaning teams old and new can hit the ground running. You’ll find over 100 integrations, a robust drag-and-drop email builder, an automation builder that can help create powerful drip campaigns and email templates galore.

You’ll find plenty of email templates in Drip.

Creating a campaign is headache-free; the same can be said about generating segmented email lists. Drip’s analytics dashboards are clean and present actionable data, and the on-site form builder allows you to create interactive forms quickly. The only downside is that Drip does not offer a free plan, and paid plans start at $39 monthly for 2,500 contacts.

Expert Take

GetResponse is a beautifully designed platform with an array of powerful tools for getting your emails to the right inboxes. All the usual suspects are here, including contact management and segmentation tools, sign-up forms, e-commerce solutions, an email builder and even an AI email generator, which I found intuitive and quite fun to use. In addition, there’s an AI-powered website builder, email autoresponders and support for automation and integrations.

GetResponse’s interface is easy to use and well-designed.

GetResponse’s AI course builder, newsletters and webinars can be monetized, meaning GetResponse is a content creator’s all-in-one dream platform. You can create, share and sell your goods in one place, but you must at least be a Creator plan member. For 1,000 contacts, prices start at $19 per month (billed monthly) for the Starter plan and increase to $1,099 per month (billed monthly) for the Enterprise plan. The prices increase as your contact list grows.

Real-world users across several review sites have mixed feelings about GetResponse. Expert Take

Mailchimp is the ideal platform for SMBs looking for an all-in-one marketing solution. With its website builder, social media marketing features, powerful email builder that features plenty of templates, and support for SMS marketing, you can do it all with one platform. I can’t say Mailchimp is the most intuitive platform I have used, but spend time with it, and you’ll see how powerful it is, especially when you learn how to use email automations and integrations.

Along with other email marketing solutions, you can segment customers to ensure they get the right messages and run campaign reports to monitor performance. Essentials costs $13 per month, Standard costs $20 per month, while Premium jumps to $297.50 for the first 12 months ($350 per month thereafter).

Users on popular review sites state that they appreciate how easy Mailchimp is to use, due to its intuitive design and ease of setting up campaigns. However, the platform’s costly plans, recent declines in customer service, which some describe as non-existent, and its billing practices, which lack transparency, are enough to make some reconsider using the platform.

Pros & Cons

ActiveCampaign features a light, airy user interface that I found enjoyable to use. It offers myriad features to help SMBs create cross-channel campaigns, retain customers and increase revenue. One of the platform’s most powerful features is the automation builder, which enables you to streamline workflows and create personalized content for every contact. Creating visually appealing emails takes minutes using ActiveCampaign’s intuitive email builder and range of templates.

ActiveCampaign offers landing pages, CRM features to help track and follow up with leads and integrated AI that can help you understand campaign analytics. It can also integrate with nearly 1,000 software platforms. Unfortunately, these powerful tools come at a price. ActiveCampaign does not offer a free plan. Paid plans range from $15 per month to $145 per month (billed monthly) for 1,000 contacts, with the price of each plan increasing as your contact list does.

Keap is a powerful customer relationship manager (CRM) that also happens to provide users with robust email marketing tools and sales features. SMBs using Keap can turn leads into paying customers in one fell swoop. I found Keap painless to navigate and use, despite its laundry list of features that includes contact management tools, landing pages, email and text marketing, sales tools, invoicing, integrations and numerous detailed reports that break down every aspect of your business.

Keap provides users with numerous reports that can help keep you on top of your business.

Dozens upon dozens of templates allowed me to quickly create emails with plenty of visuals. I can say that automations are also easy to use. Entering contacts took no time, and pulling reports was effortless. If there’s one thing that will keep SMBs away from Keap, it’s the price. Support for two users and 1,500 contacts costs $299 per month. This price includes every feature, but the price drastically increases when adding more users or contacts.

I end this roundup of the best email marketing software with Constant Contact. I included this platform due to its ease of use, hundreds of email templates, reporting capabilities, AI and e-commerce tools. These tools are simple to learn and use, and the user interface is also pleasant, due to light colors, nice fonts and logical menus. Constant Contact also offers a nifty email automation builder for drip campaigns and plenty of integrations.

You can find templates for many industries in Constant Contact.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Constant Contact is a solid email marketing platform. However, its cost of entry and user limits make me say that I’d only recommend it to SMBs with small teams. The Lite plan supports one user and very few features. It costs $12 per month but can increase depending on how many contacts you have. The Standard plan jumps to $35 and supports three users, while the Premium plan jumps to an eye-watering $80 monthly.

What Will Email Marketing Software Enable Me To Do?

If you decide email marketing is right for your business, you can simplify your marketing efforts. Email marketing software is for you if you need enticing, well-written emails with a strong call to action that make it to the intended recipient at the ideal time. The software also enables you to track all metrics such as click-through rates and sales.

Email marketing software should also take care of the mechanics of the email marketing process. Automations such as sending email batches, providing customer response options, monitoring how recipients respond and quantifying the campaign’s value in web traffic, revenue and return on investment should be hands-off. Hopefully, your efforts will lead to a transaction or deepen the relationship between you and your customer.

How To Choose the Best Email Marketing Software

Email marketing software gives you a toolbox to expand and enhance your outbound customer messaging. To choose the best email marketing software, you should ensure that your chosen platform offers enough tools and features to help you reach your target audience and goals.

Essential Email Marketing Features

Before shelling out for any old email marketing platform, SMBs should closely examine the features each provider offers. At the very least, the platform you choose should include most, if not all, of the features listed below.

  • Promotional Activity. Being able to send informative emails will boost your brand awareness and keep your business offers firmly planted in the minds of existing and potential customers.
  • Special Offers. Software that allows you to send special offers to customers’ inboxes will ensure they have the opportunity to take advantage of them.
  • Post-Sales Follow-Up. Offering after-sales service will improve your standing with customers and create an opportunity to open a valuable dialogue.
  • Customer Surveys. Surveys allow you to develop your understanding of your customer base by asking them questions about what they want.
  • Audience Targeting. Email marketing software that allows you to target segments of your database lets you focus on the areas with the greatest potential.
  • Delivery Timing. Good email marketing software will enable you to test and confirm the best time to dispatch your emails based on data such as open rates and the number of clicks through to your website.

What Will I Pay for Email Marketing Software?

Expect to pay a monthly subscription rather than an upfront charge. Your payment will reflect how many emails you send and on what frequency, with prices starting at around $10 a month (billed monthly) for entry-level plans. If you want plans offering more monthly emails and more advanced features, you can expect to pay upwards of $20 per month (billed monthly) or more, depending on your chosen platform.

Which Email Marketing Software Is Best for Your Business?

Only you know your business’s specific needs, so it’s hard to say which email marketing platform is best for your SMB. However, you can do some things to help you pick the ideal platform. First, read our reviews to see how we feel about each platform. Second, read real-world user reviews on sites such as Capterra, G2 and Trustpilot to see what real-world users think about each provider.

Lastly, you should take advantage of whatever free trial the platforms you’re interested in offer. This way, you’ll be able to use most of the tools and see if they work how you need them to before committing. If you do these three things, you’ll make the right choice for your SMB.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is email marketing software?

Email marketing software allows various SMBs to plan, organize, manage and track email marketing campaigns. The software is usually capable of generating SMS marketing campaigns as well. General features include customer and contact management, email marketing templates, email automations, integrations and landing page designers that allow you to create eye-catching pages that can help convert visitors into contacts and customers.

Does email marketing work?

Email is a tried-and-trusted marketing technique that numerous companies use to communicate with their customers and to present their wares to potential new ones. If it didn’t work, your inbox would not be so full of marketing messages from all manner of companies, from local enterprises to major blue-chip corporations.

How do I measure email marketing success?

You need to secure a return on your investment to justify the money and time you spend on email marketing. That means securing enough sales to cover your costs—but remember to consider the value of relationships you build through regular communication. This may not translate into dollar bills immediately but may bear fruit further down the line.

How do I choose an email marketing platform?

Price, ease of use, additional features and compatibility with your existing systems will influence your choice. You may decide you can manage with a basic setup or want a package to help develop your website and boost your online presence, including social media channels.

How do I get the most from email marketing software?

How you harness your email software will depend on your overall marketing approach. You may want to keep in touch with customers through a newsletter, or you may only send occasional emails when you have a promotional offer or new product line—or you may have a blended approach. Aligning your email activity with the rest of your marketing will ensure it is making a worthwhile contribution to the overall effort.

How do I build a list of email addresses?

You can buy a list of emails from a marketing agency, but the problem here is that you don’t know who you’ll be communicating with—and that could be a problem if you have a niche product or service. To build your list, you’ll need to invite people who visit your website to leave their details and give permission to use them.
